SUMMARY:Laugh Mob’s Stoner Stand Up Comedy
DESCRIPTION:Laugh Mob’s Stoner Stand Up Comedy\nThis year were make history! Laugh mob is celebrating it’s 10 year anniversary of coming to the Nimbin MardiGrass festival by bringing you the best acts to perform at Stoner Stand Up Comedy every night of the festival! Have a toke and come listen to to our jokes with a massive international line up hosted by the King of Nimbin Kyle Legacy (UK)! Acts include Ruven Govender (RSA)\, Matty B (bogan philosopher)\, Vanessa Larry Mitchell (Teardrops on my dildo)\, Gavin Scott (the comedy store)\, Artie Gallagher (Sydney fringe) & more. \nKyle Legacy (UK) – King of the Riff Kyle Legacy lives for the stage! Born & raised in Liverpool\, he now tours the the globe with the popular comedy collective ‘Laugh Mob’. More commonly known as ‘The crowdwork King’\, Legacy has been making appearances at every major festival around the world including the world record holder for most gigs done at the Edinburgh fringe festival… 230 in 24 days! Known as one of the best MCs in the UK\, Kyle is a passed comic at hot water comedy club and this year alone has hosted all the big clubs in Sydney\, Perth\, Melbourne\, Edinburgh\, England\, Estonia\, etc. There’s no room he can’t work. Other credits include opened for Erik Griffin (Workaholichs)\, performed at the comedy store in 3 different countries and Sold Out Edinburgh fringe festival 2017\, 2023 & Perth fringeworld 2021. “The young Ross Noble” ★★★★★ – The funny Tonne “The LeBron James of comedy” ★★★★½ – The Australia \nRuven Govender (RSA) As seen on ‘First Dates’\, Edinburgh Fringe festival\, Sydney comedy festival\, stunt man in training. Times As seen on Russell Brand’s hit TV show Brand X. \nMatty B acknowledged he was a bogan when he realised he owned a ‘going-out’ flanno. Having grown- up in a country town near Newcastle\, he makes full use of his upbringing and experiences from stories about growing up with a father who was a Doctor in Psychology\, to delivering pizzas while stoned as a seventeen year old boy. Despite his self-proclaimed ‘bogan’ tag\, Matty makes use of the token Aussie Racist and dumb Queenslander labels\, commenting on everyday trends such as Aldi’s ‘specials’ and school playground speed limits. Matty B’s style can only be described as casual and unashamed. His humour is dark\, twisted\, vulgar (in the best kind of way)\, surreal and very abstract. \nGavin Scott is a Comedian. Gavin is from Sydney. Gavin likes to drink. Gavin knows a little too much about UFOs & Conspiracies and other weird stuff in general. Gavin will now combine comedy and his knowledge by channelling that energy creatively instead of spending many nights in online forums and hiding from you know who… you know. This is a comedian for the curious as Gavin explores paranormal topics as well as belief structures and  even himself. Gavin wants to believe… and so should you. \n\nVanessa Larry Mitchell is a successful comic\, emcee and event coordinator\, running five of her own successful rooms in the Northern Rivers\, NSW region. Vanesa enjoys pushing the boundaries and breaking down social norms\, by saying those things women shouldn’t say in public\, but we all think! Her show\, Teardrops on My Dildo\, was the Winner Best Comedy 2022 Newcastle Fringe. Fabulous\, filthy and downright hilarious! Brace yourselves for a wild ride of side-splitting hilarity with the modern-day Queen of Sass\, as she takes you on a laugh-out-loud adventure of her trials and tribulations of parenting\, dating and all things female. \n\n\nLoud and making his Grandma proud\, Artie Gallagher is an upcoming fast talking comedian from Sydney.

SUMMARY:MardiGrass Cannabis Law Reform Rally & Parade
DESCRIPTION:Gather at 2pm in the Western Carpark!\nThe Nimbin MardiGrass Parade is not a spectator sport. Please feel free to join the parade and show your support for pot law reform.\nWe’re all in this together! Gather and get ready for the MardiGrass Parade!! Meet at the exit of the western car park\, across the road from the Community Centre Market. \nThe march is the main event\, so please walk with us for cannabis law reform! This is our 32nd consecutive annual Rally for Cannabis Law Reform. \nWe vowed to Rally every year on the first Sunday in May until we are no longer criminals for using this herb. Prohibition is an incitement\, not a control! MardiGrass will become a Festival when we can celebrate the herb without fear of prosecution and persecution. When the Police have a float in the street parade behind the Ganja Faeries\, Big Joint & POLITE\, then we really will have a proper festival and celebration. In the meantime\, this annual event is a POLITICAL PROTEST RALLY. \nLed by the Widjibal Elders of the Bunjalung Nation\, with children holding the Koori flag\, the parade this year will start off at 2.30pm from the Western carpark and make its way south along Cullen street where it will turn left and head down past the Town Hall and Greenbank into Plantem Park for the Cannabis Law Reform Rally\, speeches and MardiGrass Float Prize presentations. \nJust follow the Ganja Faeries and the BIG JOINT!! \nThe Ganja Faeries celebrate the spirit of MardiGrass. They dance behind the Bundjalung people who traditionally welcome the protesters to their country each year. Their dance has itself become a tradition simply because the laws remain unacceptable to all self respecting ganja users\, be they Bundjalung\, faeries or otherwise. \nRally speeches from Bundjalung Elders\, Michael Balderstone of the Hemp Embassy\, and guest speakers TBA. \nParade Float Awards\n\nGet out your fabrics\, banners\, paint brushes and sewing machines to get ready for the annual MardiGrass Parade Float Awards. Have a go at creating a float costume\, banner\, paper mache or sculpture about pot prohibition. Floats can be a vehicle for a powerful message about pot celebration and/or protest. We welcome floats that reflect our area\, our people\, our pride\, our fun and festive spirit\, and desire for a peaceful future. Law reform is the focus of MardiGrass and we encourage all to have a say! Prizes will be presented to the winning floats in Sativa Stadium after the Rally. \nProp and Costume Making\nSpontanous Art Event #imaginorium in Plantem Park. DRop in and get creative with local makers of sculpture\, puppets and fun. #imaginorium is building some fabulous props for this years protest parade on Sunday. EVer wanted to be a more colourful part of protest? Get your creative skates on to paint\, sew\, cut and bedazzle!! Happening throughout Saturday and Sunday!

SUMMARY:Cannabis reform in Victoria: The LCV experience 2023-24

There work has included reform of personal use\, medicinal cannabis driving rights\, a Hemp Inquiry and a pending new Hemp Act\, and an inquiry into workplace drug testing. Rachel and David welcome questions and contributions from participants. \nDavid Ettershank & Rachel Payne\, Legalise Cannabis Victoria\nDavid’s Bio: Before his election as an LCV member of the Legislation Council in the 2022 Victorian election\, David was working in the consulting practice he co-founded\, supporting not-for-profit aged care providers with strong links to specialist\, CALD and regional services. David has qualifications in Asian Studies and Industrial Relations along with an additional 20 years of experience working in the labour movement as a training and industrial officer. Diagnosed with a chronic auto-immune condition\, David is a long-term recreational and therapeutic cannabis consumer and knows first-hand how out-of-date and out-of-touch Victoria’s cannabis laws are. A member of Legalise Cannabis\, Rachel was first elected to the upper house in 2022 when the party gained its first two seats in the Victorian parliament. Holding the balance of power from the Victorian crossbench\, Rachel’s focus is on progressive cannabis law reform\, harm minimisation and protecting the rights of cannabis consumers. Before politics\, Rachel held executive\, management\, policy and research roles for organisations such as Eros Association\, Family Court Australia and Centrelink. A longstanding advocate for women’s health\, equality and inclusivity and proud member of the LGBTIQ+ community\, Rachel is now driving a conversation around cannabis as a catalyst for new economic opportunities\, environmental ingenuity and creation. \n

SUMMARY:Hemp Innovations: Product Development and Improvement
DESCRIPTION:About: In recent decades\, Hemp’s applications have diversified\, stretching beyond textiles and seeds to open up the vast universe of cannabinoids and industrial innovations. This panel will explore product developments and improvements which feed into the exciting future landscape for hemp. Where does the trajectory of hemp innovations lead? \nFacilitator: Gerald\, The Hemp Club \nSpeakers: \n\nMartin Ernegg\, Molecular Sculptor\nHanna & Leon\, Hemp Threads\n“Dr Pot” Andrew Katelaris\nRichard\, Northern Rivers Hemp Growers Co-op\, NRHGC\nRobbie Tonks\, CEO\, Australian Hardwood Charcoal Products\n\nMartin Ernegg began his work as a molecular sculptor in 1986 in Austria. His work included creating building materials from cardboard and paper and cloth. Returning to his home\, Australia\, Martin created  Hempstone by grinding hemp mache into its individual molecules and then realigning the molecules so their ‘faces’ are perfectly aligned.  Martin has now begun grinding raw hemp bast into Hempstone and molding artifacts of great practical use and beauty. In association with NRHGC Martin is building a workshop to make Hempstone artifacts and share his knowledge with the farmers who will take his work further. \nGerald: My interest in cannabis spans 50+ years\, in which time I have dedicated my selves to the plant. I have propagated cannabis on every continent except Antartica plus a few non continental islands. For the last six years I have propagated it under licence. The three main strands of my interest now lay in plant fibre as a building material\, cosmetic use of the whole plant for health and rejuvenation\, carbon sequestration by means of cannabis hemp bio-char. \nHanna and Leon are Hemp Threads\, an industrial hemp company formed in 2019 which aims to bring local hemp production and processing to the northern rivers. We have experimented with fibres\, building materials\, foods and forms of regenerative farming. We are currently specialising in hemp seed oil and flour production with the help of our cold pressed oil machine. We envision small-scale hemp farms with centralised processing facilities to empower people to live on the land and contribute to a plant-based economy. We are passionate about regenerative agriculture and organic cannabis cultivation to help heal damaged agricultural land. \nDr Andrew Katelaris: I graduated from Sydney University Medicine in 1982 and in 1992 was awarded a Doctorate of Medicine in the sub-specialty of Immunopathology. My interest in Cannabis and Hemp started in 1988 while researching for solutions to the old growth forest controversy which opened the hidden history of the industrial uses of Cannabis and the political basis of the Cannabis prohibition. In 1995 we produced a documentary “Billion Dollar Crop” which outlined the many uses of Cannabis Hemp for the production of paper\, clothing\, building materials and many more items. In 1998 I obtained the first ever licence to cultivate Cannabis for scientific research and analysis. Our research proved very successful as we demonstrated that Cannabis is an efficient weed smothering and soil conditioning crop\, which produced a large quantity of quality fibre\, a nutritious seed and a safe and effective resin medicine. \nRobert Tonks’s company builds off grid pyrolysis equipment to turn carbon based waste into sequestered carbon\, soil and soil conditioners. Since 2019 Robert has been testing hemp as a feedstock for his pyrolysis ovens with excellent results. Robert’s technology completes the circle in hemp’s circular economy.

SUMMARY:Cannabinopathic Medicine and the Future of Sustainable Healthcare
DESCRIPTION:About: What is the future of cannabinopathic medicine? Will it continue to develop on its own as an alternative medicine joining other alternative schools of medicine such as naturopathic\, homeopathic and osteopathic medicine\, or will it fully integrate into allopathic (or modern Western) medicine? What are the factors which affect this future\, like training for new generations of doctors? Are medical schools teaching anything about the endocannabinoid system and how it relates to medical science? In the face of ongoing prohibition and the standoffish attitude of allopathic medicine\, in what direction will cannabinopathic medicine continue to grow? \nSpeaker: Dr Jeffrey Hergenrather\nBio: In the 1970’s\, Dr. Jeffrey Hergenrather became perhaps the first licensed MD to practice cannabinopathic medicine\, albeit secretly\, and with far less knowledge of the plant’s true medical potential than we have today. As house doctor for legendary counterculture commune The Farm\, Hergenrather tended to more than 1\,000 people\, who all felt perfectly comfortable confiding that smoking a joint helped relieve their chronic pain\, insomnia\, anxiety\, menstrual cramps\, migraine headaches\, and a slew of other ailments. \nDr Hergenrather’s medical experience includes 26 years in emergency medicine and private general practice. He continues in a consultation practice in northern California with face-to-face\, telephone\, and on-line consultations for the use of cannabis as medicine. His practice\, research\, and teaching focus on the medicinal use of cannabis through a wide range of conditions and age groups – from infants to end-of-life care. He is an adjunct professor at Sonoma State University teaching a Biology course in the Medical Use of Cannabis. \nHe is a founding member and past-president of the Society of Cannabis Clinicians (SCC)\, a non – profit corporation dedicated to quality patient care\, education\, and clinical studies. The SCC is the oldest organization of physicians specializing in the use of cannabis as medicine. Hergenrather is a member of the International Alliance for Cannabinoid Medicines (IACM)\, and the International Cannabinoid Research Society (ICRS). He serves as an expert witness and consultant to government and industry in supporting safe access to measured cannabis medicines.

DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Dr Andrew Katelaris\nAbout: It is generally unusual to be able to find a single solution to multiple serious problems.  Land and water degradation\, accumulation of micro plastics in plant and animal life from synthetic fabrics and packaging\, loss of forests\, increasing costs for building products\, deficiency of omega 3 containing foods.  These and many other problems began when the western world transitioned from a predominantly carbohydrate based economy to one much more reliant on extraction of hydrocarbons.  Prior to this Hemp was the world’s most grown crop and Hemp fibre the most traded commodity.  Intelligent historians link this to the destruction of the Hemp industries by the 1937 Marijuana Transfer Tax Act initiated by those with competing vested interests.  The introduction of these restrictive laws was opposed by Popular Mechanics magazine in 1938 when they published an article demonstrating the immense economic potential of the Hemp plant\, stating it could produce over 20\,000 items of commerce. \nHemp is a hardy\, drought tolerant and highly adaptable plant that can suppress weeds and condition the soil.  Enabling legislation (Industrial Hemp Experimental Development) was passed in 1995\, yet decades later there are only a few hundred hectares of Hemp grown here annually and very little tertiary production.  Is it likely we will ever see international scale non-wood paper mills\, textile mills and a range of Hemp plastic fabrication plants here in Australia?  The factors that are limiting our transition from hydrocarbons to carbohydrates involve personal and political issues.  Small minded selfishness and ego issues has seen friction between the current participants in the nascent industries and contributed to the lack of progress.  However\, It is unlikely that the Hemp industries can ever grow in any substantial manner without significant government involvement.  The Department of Primary Industries have contributed very little\, while wasting time and money with unnecessary “compliance” issues.  By now there should have been well conducted field trials where all currently grown industrial cultivars are sown in replicate plots under identical conditions to determine their photo period and THC levels.  If compliant that would obviate the need for future THC testing\, greatly facilitating confidence in undertaking large scale planting.  The different plants could be tested for fibre content\, enabling optimisation of quality.  Further\, once the photo period is established at a given latitude the flowering times can be calculated for anywhere and manipulated.  For example to increase biomass production seed flowering in March at Nimbin could be sown in Victoria with the increased growing season giving up to 30% increase yield.  The fastest way forward would be for the government to support the industry like they did the wool industry during its crisis\, by setting a grading system and price for Hemp fibre and warehousing the bast for three years.  During this time production lines would be established\, confident there was sufficient fibre to sustain production.  The farmers could confidently grow the Hemp bast for warehousing\, while the hurd could find profitable application as hempcrete or hemp plastics. \nIt is an ongoing disgrace to Australia that we were the last country on Earth to legalise Hemp seed as a human food.  The applications passed the Food Standards but were blocked by the ministerial council\, initially under Howard. The TGA and other regulatory bodies are a malignant joke\, where pseudoscience is used to serve corporate interests\, not public health.  The debacle that is the current medical Cannabis scheme illustrates the total disregard for those in need of its therapeutic effect.  Expensive imported product is preferred to locally grown bud\, because it has not passed the TGA\, described as the price maintenance unit for big pharma.  No attempt to match a particular cultivar to a specific effect\, such as enhanced anticonvulsant effect has been undertaken.  Whether the acidic forms of the cannabinoids are of specific benefit in certain circumstances has not been determined.  Alarmingly\, parents who administer Cannabis products to their children\, or even use official Cannabis preparations for valid medical purposes have had their children at risk of seizure. \nWhich brings me onto my closing remarks.  NSW has the very dubious distinction internationally of having most children under the “care of the minister”.  My experience following the Chase seizure has opened my eyes to the terrible reality of the ongoing stolen generation.  DOCS\, now DCJ and related interstate entities generate false ROSH (risk of serious harm) claims\, bolstered by innuendo\, exaggeration or outright lies and use section 43 to remove any child.  This often occurs on a Friday afternoon and the child is shunted into the Children’s Court and held under its power for two years without ability to appeal.  It is a grotesque problem.  The very misnamed “Children and Young Persons Care and Protection Act” provides the necessary protection for the perpetrators of these acts.  Section 105 prohibits the mentioning of the name of any child seized by the minister. The penalty is two years in gaol and as an act of extra malice the framers made it a strict liability offence\, meaning that even if the action is for the benefit of the child then the offence still stands.  I am the first person to be charged under s105\, although others subsequently charged were gaoled then deported.  Myself and others conducted a Constitutional challenge but the High Court refused to hear it.  Two supreme court judges directly informed me that it mattered not that a child was seized illegally by the government\, s105 still applied.  I cannot accept what I see as judicial fascism and will be contesting the matter in October before a jury.  Before concluding I will share one more experience.  Last year I was in a licensing dispute with the police.  I took the matter to the AAT.  To my consternation the commissioner made an application to the tribunal to have evidence heard\, in my absence. Evidently\, the police were relying on illegally obtained evidence and didn’t want to disclose methodology.  I was incredulous then furious when informed by the tribunal that this was now a common occurrence. \nAustralia started as a penal colony and regrettably we have not evolved greatly.  A government that seizes children illegally with all the pain and generational trauma that is involved also torments medical Cannabis patients and law abiding citizens with inferior\, expensive product and draconian saliva testing.  The window is rapidly closing on our ability to direct and own our future.  The frog in cold water analogy applies.  We have been seduced into a digital web of dependence and control and through its effect the Human spirit has been reduced.  After three decades of Hemp activism I am more convinced than ever that Hemp can indeed change the world and give a future we would be proud to hand to the next generation.  If the WEF version of the future is not enough to propel us to urgent action I don’t know what would be. \nBio: In 1988 research began assessing Industrial Hemp as a solution to the native forest logging problem.  In 1990 a trip to Wageningen University was undertaken to study the Dutch government’s “Hemp for Paper“ project. With this information and in co-operation with Fritz and Patsy\, who began the Hemp for Paper consortium in Tasmania\, we approached various state governments for co-operation\, but found closed minds and closed doors. \nA detailed study of the Drugs Misuse and Trafficking Act revealed Article 24(4)(b).  This section allowed the cultivation of an otherwise prohibited plant for scientific research and analysis. Up to that time this legislation had never been used and it took the government several years to recognise its validity.  In 1995\, with the assistance of independent Tony Windsor\, we introduced the Industrial Hemp (Experimental Development) Act as enabling legislation and finally in 1998 we obtained the first ever Hemp cultivation licence. \nIn an act of bureaucratic malfeasance the government made a caveat that only registered European cultivars be used in the trial\, after being informed that such plants were not suitable for Australian conditions.  We circumvented this by travelling to Hungary and working with the world renown Hemp agronomist Professor Bosca\, who crossed the European staple Kompolt with Asiatic varieties to produce Cannabis Australis.  This variety was very successful in our field trials producing over 20 tons of dry stem material per hectare.  I then formed a project with Professor Ron Postle\, Textile Technology at UNSW.  An Italian textile variety was sent to labs in Germany and Japan and was found to have a fineness of 10-12 microns\, earning much praise from the scientists. \nIn 1999 after discussion with the then chief health officer Dr Andrew Wilson my licence was extended to include the cultivation of up to twenty medical cultivars.  In 2001 Dr Wilson retired and was replaced by Greg Stewart. The mood had changed in the government and first the medical licences\, then the industrial licences were cancelled.  In order not to lose the important genetics I planted half a hectare  and told people it was an experimental crop of kenaf.  This worked for a while but a malicious individual reported it and 30 armed police arrived and I was arrested and taken to Maitland gaol.  At my initial hearing Magistrate Jackson accepted our argument that these genetics were of national importance and gave an order protecting the crop for 10 days while further information was received.  The police\, in an act of duplicity ignored this order and 10 of them spent the day pulling and counting the plants (40\,000)  They then attempted to burn them but being green and with light rain this was difficult.  They then ordered a semitrailer load of old bridge timber and 200 litres of accelerant and eventually destroyed the crop.  Although threatened with a 20 year sentence I eventually was given a bond. \nI continued the medical research but faced constant harassment from the medical board and the HCCC\, despite the obvious clinical success that were being achieved in chronic pain and epilepsy.  In 2017 I was arrested and charged with supply\, large commercial quantity\, carrying a life sentence.  I conducted the first ever successful medical necessity defence\, obtaining a resounding “not guilty” verdict from the jury after less than 30 minutes deliberation.

SUMMARY:The Drug taking Lawyer - My Story About Coming Out As A Drug User
DESCRIPTION:About: Miles Hunt came out as the drug-taking lawyer on the front page of the SMH about a decade ago and survived to tell the tale – although it wasn’t all smooth sailing. He will discuss the reasons why he ‘came out’ and the effects it had on his career\, reputation and personal relationships. Discussing the pros and cons of doing this for an individual\, but also the benefits to society of an open drug discourse. He acknowledges that coming out is not an option for everyone\, and that there is some inherent luck and privilege in his story\, but as a lawyer\, he believes it is vitally important to fight for better and more just laws\, especially in relation to drugs. \nSpeaker: Miles Hunt\, Drug Taking Lawyer / Unharm / Drug Law Reform Party\nBio: Miles Hunt is a practising lawyer\, writer and novelist as well as a co-founder of leading drugs reform NGO\, Unharm. He has published two Novels with Arcadia / ASP – a dystopian (The Information Editor) and satire about life\, the universe and random chance (The Unfortunate Death of James Douglas O’Flaherty). He ran for the Senate in 2013 for the Drug Law Reform Party (sadly only getting 0.01% of the vote)\, and has been a proud supporter of legalisation and decriminalisation all his adult life – speaking and writing on the topic many times. He came out as the drug-taking lawyer on the front page of the SMH about a decade ago and survived to tell the tale – although it wasn’t all smooth sailing. \n

SUMMARY:Hemp Olympix
DESCRIPTION:Sometime in the mid 90s\, Chibo\, Bob and Michael walked into the Hemp Bar and decided that Mardigrass needed events which would entertain as well as educate\, and the Hemp Olympix were born!! \n \n11:30 am : Hemp Olympix registration\nRegister at Sativa Stadium for the Hemp Olympix! $2 Entry into all HEMP Olympix Events. \n12 pm : Hemp Olympix Bong Throw & Yell and then the Growers Ironperson Events\nHosted by S Sorrensen and Alan Glover \nBong Throw & Yell: Entrants throw a bong full of stinking water as far as possible whilst yelling “Free the Weed!” or a similar sentiment. \nOver 50s Bong Throw & Yell: The older I get\, the better I was. \nGrowers Ironperson: Involves lugging a sack of fertiliser and buckets of water around the simulated growing area obstacle course with a tick and leech infested lantana tunnel. The men’s event is a 40kg sack while the women contend with an 18kg sack. The top 5 crawl into the final on Sunday. \nThe Dealer’s Nightmare – a new event in 2024? We’ve recently heard from the International HEMP Olympix Committee (IHOC) official S Sorrensen that a major change to the HEMP Olympix program has come down from IHOC HQ in Brussels. It seems several of last year’s Nimbin Iron Grower Person Event contestants had taken an inordinately long time to recover and one\, a medallist\, has still not recovered. IHOC official Alan Glover (yes\, there are two IHOC officials in Australia) said\, “While we are still battling the consequences of the drug war with illegal unregulated chemical drugs on the street\, the committee has decided this event must be suspended until the war is over and respect for drug use returns.” After due consideration by the IHOC\, plans are afoot for a replacement gold-medal event reflecting the change from outdoor to indoor growing\, another drug war impact. The Dealer’s Nightmare will be a team event testing quick and accurate reactions to police raids . . . check back for more details. \nIn exciting news\, the IHOC is also considering including Correct Weight as an official HEMP Olympix event this year after its growing popularity in the Fringe Olympix. Contestants aim to to fill a baggie with exactly 28.3 grams. Correct weight keeps the bag. \n \n5 pm : HEMP Olympix Joint Rolling [in the Town Hall!]\nHosted by S Sorrensen and Alan Glover \nMust burn from one end to another! The 4 Categories: \nSpeed Roll – Roll a standard 3-paper joint as fast as you can. Joints must include a cardboard filter or will be judged incomplete. \nArtistic Roll – Roll the most beautiful joint within 10 minutes with as many papers as you like. \nRoll in the Dark – Athletes are blindfolded. \nAdverse Conditions Roll – Dependent on weather conditions on the day and the judges’ creativity. \n\nHEMP OLYMPIX – Sport with meaning                                      \nS Sorrensen \nIt’s difficult to determine exactly when the Hemp Olympix began. We know\, of course\, the modern Hemp Olympix began in 1896 in Athens\, attended by 84 athletes\, 600 spectators and 2115 police. \nWe also know that the modern Hemp Olympix was the relighting of the original classical Hemp Olympix played at the base of Mount Olympus more than 2500 years ago\, when the Greeks chucked bongs in the nude\, joints were rolled with papyrus and the results recorded on vellum. \nCannabis has always been a key element in the evolution of humanity from tree-dwelling primate to upstanding human. \nSome evolutionary biologists speculate that the development of an opposable thumb in Homo habilis 2.3 million years ago was due to joint rolling. \nEvolutionary theorist Professor Niger Umber theorises that it was in order to harvest the top heads of Cannabis sativa that caused the early human to stand upright. \nCannabis has been essential part of the human story. And so too has sport. Hence the Hemp Olympix. \nIn 776 BC\, the first official Hemp Olympix was held at Olympia\, in Greece. Featuring the three traditional sporting disciplines – Bong Throw & Yell\, Iron Growerperson Event and Joint Roll – these games were held every four years in honour of Zeus\, the God of Competition\, and Cannabi\, the Goddess of Pot. The athletes\, from all over the known world\, performed naked\, and the winners were given a wreath of Cannabis leaves as a prize to be enjoyed later. \nThe first modern Hemp Olympix was held in Athens\, Greece\, in 1896. \nThe International Hemp Olympix Committee (IHOC)\, formed in 1894\, determined that the modern Hemp Olympix would be an event open to all nationalities and genders to celebrate sport\, Cannabis and the human body. \nThe 1896 Athens Hemp Olympix was a huge success. \nAfter that first Hemp Olympix\, the Games flourished\, being held every four years\, as was the ancient custom. But the IHOC decided in 1904 that the Hemp Olympix would be held in different towns and cities around the world. \nThe Hemp Olympix now attracts teams from around the world\, from Portugal (where Cannabis is legal and the Portugese Hemp Olympix team is funded with money saved from dropping the War on Drugs) to Russia (where war and government are funded by the War on Drugs). \nIn May\, 1993\, the Hemp Olympix was held for the first time in Australia\, in a village called Nimbin\, as a sporting resistance to a tyrannical suppression of the burning bush funded by climate change denial and alcoholic dementia. \nSince then\, 135 countries have hosted the Hemp Olympix. \nNimbin has vowed to host a MardiGrass Hemp Olympix every year until the ridiculous laws of Cannabis prohibition are repealed. \nIn 2003\, two Australian blokes became international Hemp Olympix Officials\, having undergone their Integrity Assessment\, having passed their Knowledge of the Rules and Etiquette for the Games of the Hemp Olympix Examination\, and having received a very positive result in their Drug Test. \nAlan Glover and S Sorrensen now spend their time travelling to Hemp Olympix around the world\, making sure the rules and ethics of the games are adhered to. \nThey officiate at the annual Hemp Olympix at the Nimbin MardiGrass where athletes from around the globe compete for prizes\, glory and the sheer fun of it. \nYou too can celebrate all that is good in humanity\, make fun of all that is ridiculous (like the marijuana laws)\, and have stories to tell the kids\, by being a athlete in the Hemp Olympix. (Just sign up on the day at the Hemp Olympix Sign Up Table.) \nOr you can be a spectator and thrill to a 40-metre Bong Throw & Yell\, have your breath taken away at the speed and grace of a sub-20-second Joint Roll or shake your head at the strength and determination of an Irongrower Person. \nYou can also delve more deeply into the history\, the characters\, and the rules of the Hemp Olympix by purchasing ‘A Spectator’s Guide to the Hemp Olympix’ from the Nimbin Hemp Embassy. \nThrow bong\, live long.

SUMMARY:Amanita muscaria: poisonous toadstool\, noxious weed\, or curious elixir
DESCRIPTION:About: Traditionally regarded as a toxic toadstool best not touched\, the narrative around Amanita muscaria has been changing\, with evolving conversations around its status as a noxious weed\, and its supposed medicinal benefits. Few mushrooms have so many myths associated with it\, but whether it be a poison or elixir\, the jinn is out of the bottle – there is an emerging market of books\, workshops\, gummies\, and extracts. So What has changed? This talk is a review of some of the recent literature\, leading into harm minimisation and a few other things to keep in mind with this curious toadstool. \nSpeaker: Caine Barlow\, Entheogenesis Australis\nBio: Caine Barlow is a Fungi Educator and Mycologist based in Melbourne\, Australia. He has a Bachelor of Science from the University of Tasmania\, and a Master of Science from the University of Melbourne. Caine also has qualifications in horticulture and permaculture. He works closely with the Australian organisation Entheogenesis Australis\, and is a co-founder of US-based organisation The Entheome Foundation. Caine started foraging mushrooms in the early 1990’s\, and has been cultivating gourmet fungi since the mid 2000’s. Caine has taught mushroom cultivation through private workshops\, through mycological societies\, at Entheogenesis Australis events\, with Fungi Academy\, and at numerous mushroom themed events. He has co-written and delivered workshops with Mycommunity Applied Mycology\, and co-wrote and delivered content for DoubleBlind’s 102 Mushroom cultivation course. Caine is a mentor for Milkwood for their online Mushroom Cultivation course. He has written for Entheogenesis Australis\, DoubleBlind\, ThirdWave\, MicroDose\, and Healing Maps. Caine is currently working on a book project\, expected to be released May 2024! He is an admin and moderator on many Facebook fungi groups. In addition to fungi\, he has had a long-term interest in ethnobotany\, ethnobotanical literature\, and growing medicinal plants. Find him on Instagram\, @guerrillamycology. His website is www.guerrillamycology.com \n  \nMardiGrass is also all about sensible law reform for ALL drugs\, so this year we will partner with Entheogenesis Australis [EGA] to present a program dedicated to other medicinal plants. SUMMARY:Navigating the troubled seas of politics
DESCRIPTION:About: A description of the first full parliamentary term of the first elected legalise cannabis politicians in Western Australia – the highs and lows. And the potential for victory. And a map for the future? \nSpeaker: Dr Brian Walker\, WA Legalise Cannabis MLC\nBrian’s Bio: I am a member of the Legislative Council in the Parliament of Western Australia for the Legalise Cannabis Party. I practised medicine for many years in many different countries\, before finally settling into practice as a GP at Serpentine Medical Centre. I have front-line experience treating patients in hospitals\, emergency departments\, and general practice\, including specialising in helping those who come to me seeking help obtaining Cannabis as a natural alternative to opioid-based medication to ease their pain and suffering. \nI want to make changes in society. As a Member of Parliament\, I know of a certainty that far too many of our current laws are archaic\, while others are unfit for purpose. High-level decisions have been made without adequate medical-scientific understanding\, based often on fear rather than knowledge. \nHealth and wellness are my passions\, and I am fighting for your freedom to use Cannabis as you see fit\, as long as you do no harm to others. More than that\, I am looking to identify and amend the fundamental causes of poor health. These include violence in general\, as well as domestic violence\, homelessness\, mental health issues\, and poverty. \nAdd your voice to mine\, so together\, we can Overgrow the Government!

SUMMARY:Potential of Psychedelics for the Betterment of Well People
DESCRIPTION:Beyond Medicalisation: Exploring the Potential of Psychedelics for the Betterment of Well People\nAbout: Given the focus of recent research into the medical applications of psychedelic-assisted therapies for the treatment of a range of mental health conditions from depression and anxiety to eating disorders and substance dependence\, the broader community would be forgiven for thinking that treating sick people is the only use for psychedelics at the current time. However\, many closer to the action are well aware that psychedelics have a deep history of human use in informing cosmology\, forging community\, and engendering a connection with the natural world. The current wave of psychedelic research actually commenced with a clinical trial that demonstrated the positive impacts of psilocybin on the mental state of healthy participants\, and so in this talk I will discuss several facets of the concept of the “Betterment of Well People”\, leading to an exploration of the potential for psychedelics to enhance our lives in ways other than just the purely medical. \nSpeaker: Dr Martin Williams\, Executive Director\, Psychedelic Research in Science and Medicine\nBio: Dr Martin Williams is a Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Mental Health\, Swinburne University. His research background is in Medicinal Chemistry and Pharmacology. Martin is a co-investigator on a number of Australian clinical trials of psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy\, including the St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne study of psilocybin-assisted psychotherapy in palliative care; the Monash PsiConnect neuroimaging study of psilocybin with mindfulness meditation; the Swinburne pilot study and 3PAP RCT of 2- vs 3-dose psilocybin-assisted therapy for depression; and several other studies of psilocybin\, MDMA and other psychedelics for the treatment of a range of mental health conditions. Martin is also a founding member and volunteer supporting Entheogenesis Australis & PRISM.

SUMMARY:Marijuana Australiana
DESCRIPTION:“Homegrown cannabis culture down under” \nScreening plus Q&A with Director\, Rich Baron\nAbout the documentary: Conveyed by an often humorous line up of quintessentially Aussie characters\, Marijuana Australiana (2016) is a feature length documentary about Australia’s evolving relationship with the world of recreational and medical cannabis. Unveiling a unique local cannabis culture and history\, the film takes us from the hippy town of Nimbin to the politically charged emergence of medical cannabis law reform that is sweeping the nation. Marijuana Australiana embeds viewers deep inside tenuous underground networks of growers and suppliers who bravely provide free medical cannabis to cancer patients and children with epilepsy\, despite systematic persecution by law enforcement. As gravely ill Australians continue to risk everything to access life saving medicine\, will the slow grind of legislative change signal an end to the criminalisation of patients\, their families and benevolent suppliers?

SUMMARY:MardiGrass Comedy Show
DESCRIPTION:The MardiGrass Comedy Show is a tradition almost as old as police harassment. But it’s funnier\, much funnier. And nobody gets hurt (unless your sides split – or you gag on a gag). A rather pleasant way to rally for drug law reform. Featuring the comedic talents of Jenny Wynter\, Steady Eddy and Peter Willey\, the show\, as always\, will be hosted by that dynamic duo of droll\, Glover & Sorrensen. \nJenny Wynter is an international musical comedian known for her spontaneous musical creations inspired by audience suggestions. Armed with flashing wit and funny bones\, she is making her first appearance at the MARDIGRASS COMEDY SHOW. \nSteady Eddy was diagnosed with cerebral palsy when he was nine months old. Some people thought this is why he didn’t learn to walk until he was five\, but\, when asked\, Steady said\, “I was just pacing myself.” Yep\, and he’s paced himself to stand-up stardom. Now\, he realises there must be more to life than sex and money. He’s started wearing tie-dye and hemp undies. He just wants to live in yogic bliss and do his thing at MardiGrass. \nPeter Willey is hilarious. He says so himself. Comedian\, singer\, songwriter and parodist\, he draws inspiration from the suburban wastelands. His songs and routines are witty and insightful and often\, um\, just silly. His jokes have not been tested on animals. \nAlan Glover and S Sorrensen are comedians – and good mates. It is a special relationship that is the art (and heart) of Glover & Sorrensen. They’ve performed all over this wide brown quarry\, but especially love working their two-handed stand-up magic at MardiGrass in Nimbin\, S’s hometown.
