SUMMARY:Marijuana Australiana
DESCRIPTION:“Homegrown cannabis culture down under” \nScreening plus Q&A with Director\, Rich Baron\nAbout the documentary: Conveyed by an often humorous line up of quintessentially Aussie characters\, Marijuana Australiana (2016) is a feature length documentary about Australia’s evolving relationship with the world of recreational and medical cannabis. Unveiling a unique local cannabis culture and history\, the film takes us from the hippy town of Nimbin to the politically charged emergence of medical cannabis law reform that is sweeping the nation. Marijuana Australiana embeds viewers deep inside tenuous underground networks of growers and suppliers who bravely provide free medical cannabis to cancer patients and children with epilepsy\, despite systematic persecution by law enforcement. As gravely ill Australians continue to risk everything to access life saving medicine\, will the slow grind of legislative change signal an end to the criminalisation of patients\, their families and benevolent suppliers?

SUMMARY:The Mackay murder and NSW drug laws
DESCRIPTION:About: The decriminalisation of cannabis was on the political agenda in NSW but the murder of Donald Mackay in Griffith in 1977 reshaped NSW drug laws. The Mackay murder is one of the black holes of Australian history\, involving corrupt NSW police\, politicians and the Nugan Hand bank. \nSpeaker: Dr John Jiggens\, Hemp Historian\nBio: Dr John Jiggens is a citizen journalist. He was the founding editor of The Westender and The Cane Toad Times and he currently works in the community newsroom at Bay-FM in Byron Bay. A self-described “minor god of cannabis”\, he has published several books on the history of the genus and on the origins of cannabis prohibition\, including Sir Joseph Banks and the Question of Hemp\, The Killer Cop and the Murder of Donald Mackay\, The Joke and\, with Jack Herer\, the Australian version of The Emperor Wears No Clothes. Along with Matt Mawson\, Anne Jones and Damien Ledwich\, he edited The Best of The Cane Toad Times. His most popular work\, however\, remains his PhD\, Marijuana Australiana: Cannabis Use\, Popular Culture and the Americanisation of Drugs Policy in Australia 1938-1988\, which has been full-texted downloaded over 25\,000 times. \n \n

SUMMARY:MardiGrass Comedy Show
DESCRIPTION:The MardiGrass Comedy Show is a tradition almost as old as police harassment. But it’s funnier\, much funnier. And nobody gets hurt (unless your sides split – or you gag on a gag). A rather pleasant way to rally for drug law reform. Featuring the comedic talents of Jenny Wynter\, Steady Eddy and Peter Willey\, the show\, as always\, will be hosted by that dynamic duo of droll\, Glover & Sorrensen. \nJenny Wynter is an international musical comedian known for her spontaneous musical creations inspired by audience suggestions. Armed with flashing wit and funny bones\, she is making her first appearance at the MARDIGRASS COMEDY SHOW. \nSteady Eddy was diagnosed with cerebral palsy when he was nine months old. Some people thought this is why he didn’t learn to walk until he was five\, but\, when asked\, Steady said\, “I was just pacing myself.” Yep\, and he’s paced himself to stand-up stardom. Now\, he realises there must be more to life than sex and money. He’s started wearing tie-dye and hemp undies. He just wants to live in yogic bliss and do his thing at MardiGrass. \nPeter Willey is hilarious. He says so himself. Comedian\, singer\, songwriter and parodist\, he draws inspiration from the suburban wastelands. His songs and routines are witty and insightful and often\, um\, just silly. His jokes have not been tested on animals. \nAlan Glover and S Sorrensen are comedians – and good mates. It is a special relationship that is the art (and heart) of Glover & Sorrensen. They’ve performed all over this wide brown quarry\, but especially love working their two-handed stand-up magic at MardiGrass in Nimbin\, S’s hometown.

SUMMARY:Beyond Psilocybin: Exploring Alternative Psychedelics
DESCRIPTION:Beyond Psilocybin: Exploring the Clinical Potential of Alternative and Novel Psychedelics\nAbout: Given the focus of recent research into the medical applications of psilocybin-assisted therapy for the treatment of a range of mental health conditions from depression and anxiety to eating disorders and substance dependence\, the community would be forgiven for believing that psilocybin is the only “classic” psychedelic to offer therapeutic benefit. However\, psychedelics have a rich diversity of chemistry\, pharmacology and phenomenology\, and so there is arguably a great deal of untapped potential to be explored within the psychedelic pharmacopeia. In this talk I will discuss several facets of the actions and effects of psychedelics\, leading to an exploration of the potential for psychedelics beyond psilocybin to be utilised in medical practice. \nSpeaker: Dr Martin Williams\, Executive Director\, Psychedelic Research in Science and Medicine\nBio: Dr Martin Williams is a Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Mental Health\, Swinburne University. His research background is in Medicinal Chemistry and Pharmacology. Martin is a co-investigator on a number of Australian clinical trials of psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy\, including the St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne study of psilocybin-assisted psychotherapy in palliative care; the Monash PsiConnect neuroimaging study of psilocybin with mindfulness meditation; the Swinburne pilot study and 3PAP RCT of 2- vs 3-dose psilocybin-assisted therapy for depression; and several other studies of psilocybin\, MDMA and other psychedelics for the treatment of a range of mental health conditions. Martin is also a founding member and volunteer supporting Entheogenesis Australis & PRISM. \n  \n

SUMMARY:What regulations do we want\, and how to get there?
DESCRIPTION:About: This panel will explore a range of legalisation hot spots including – roadside drug testing and treating cannabis the same as other prescription medicine\, adult use\, removing past cannabis convictions\, fixing the medicinal cannabis scheme\, and decriminalising psychedelics \n“Currently legal cannabis is only available via a prescription from a doctor. This was not in our wildest dreams when we first asked for the laws to change. We wanted to be allowed to grow our own plants and be able to freely buy it if we don’t; we thought we’d be able to drive when unimpaired\, same as for any drugs; and we hoped to create hemployment in a cottage industry rather than Big Cannabis taking over supply. How do we turn our dreams of a DIY Cannabis community model into reality?” Michael Balderstone\, MardiGrass Head \nFacilitator: David Heilpern\, Drive Change Campaign \nLegalise Cannabis Panelists: \n\nJeremy Buckingham\, LC NSW\nDavid Ettershank\, LC Victoria\n\nRachel Payne\, LC Victoria\nFiona Patten\, Reason Party\nDr Brian Walker\, LC Western Australia\n\nGreens Panelists: \n\nDavid Shoebridge\, Greens Senator for NSW\nCate Faehrmann\, NSW Greens\nSue Higginson\, NSW Greens\n\nSpeaker Biographies \nJeremy Buckingham: Over two decades I’ve been a passionate advocate for community\, the environment and common-sense laws that serve the needs of the people. As an experienced MP with a reputation for honesty\, conviction and commitment\, it’s an honour and a privilege to serve the people of NSW. In this term\, I am committed to bringing about progressive drug law reform\, legalising cannabis\, fixing the broken RDT system and growing the hemp industry. I am also focused on ensuring that we protect civil liberties\, our environment and enact policies that look after the disadvantaged in our society. \nDavid Ettershank: Before his election as an LCV member of the Legislation Council in the 2022 Victorian election\, David was working in the consulting practice he co-founded\, supporting not-for-profit aged care providers with strong links to specialist\, CALD and regional services. David has qualifications in Asian Studies and Industrial Relations along with an additional 20 years of experience working in the labour movement as a training and industrial officer. Diagnosed with a chronic auto-immune condition\, David is a long-term recreational and therapeutic cannabis consumer and knows first-hand how out-of-date and out-of-touch Victoria’s cannabis laws are. He is determined to see cannabis legalised\, de-stigmatised\, and its many benefits recognised for all adult Victorian consumers. \nCate Faehrmann is a Greens Member of the NSW Legislative Council. Her areas of policy interest include urgently needed drug law reform. In 2021\, Cate introduced An Act to amend the [NSW] Road Transport Act 2013 to exclude users of medicinal cannabis from the offence relating to driving with the presence of certain drugs in a person’s oral fluid. Cate has admitted to the personal use of recreational drugs\, including cannabis and medicinal CBD products and has been leading a campaign to Rethink Reform drug laws as the Greens Drug Law Reform spokesperson. \nDavid Heilpern was appointed as a Magistrate in 1998\, and was at the time the youngest magistrate in Australia. Since “retiring” in May 2020\, he has resumed private practice as a solicitor\, as well as returning to Southern Cross University as an adjunct and practice professor. David is committed to speaking out about drug law reform\, particularly the drug driving detection laws\, to ensure that drug laws change to reflect the principles of harm reduction. In particular\, he believes that harm is only increased by applying a law and order model to victimless crimes. \nSue Higginson is a Greens MLC in the NSW Parliament driven by social and environmental justice. Her journey started in the old-growth forests of the North Coast as a frontline activist and her passion for protecting our precious native forests is just as strong today. Sue is in the NSW Parliament to bring in laws that protect First Nations people and their culture\, to end logging in our public native forests and the destruction of nature\, and to challenge the corporate interests that want coal and gas mining extended and expanded in communities across our state. \nFiona Patten is the leader of the Reason Party and was a member of the Victorian Legislative Council between 2014 and 2022\, until she lost her seat at the 2022 state election. She recently received an honourable mentioned by the McKinnon Prize Shortlisting Committee\, an independent\, non-partisan award that acknowledges outstanding political leadership across the political spectrum. Patten established the Australian Sex Party in 2009 to focus on personal freedoms after deep frustration with stagnation on censorship\, Marriage Equality and drug law reform. In 2017\, the Australian Sex Party changed its name to the Reason Party. During her time as a Victorian MP\, Fiona has been credited for playing pivotal roles in achieving social reforms in Victoria\, with examples including the passage of Victoria’s assisted dying legislation\, and the trial of a medically supervised drug injecting room in Richmond. \nRachel Payne is the Member for South-Eastern Metropolitan Region in Victorian Parliament’s Legislative Council. A member of Legalise Cannabis\, Rachel was first elected to the upper house in 2022 when the party gained its first two seats in the Victorian parliament. Holding the balance of power from the Victorian crossbench\, Rachel’s focus is on progressive cannabis law reform\, harm minimisation and protecting the rights of cannabis consumers. Before politics\, Rachel held executive\, management\, policy and research roles for organisations such as Eros Association\, Family Court Australia and Centrelink. A longstanding advocate for women’s health\, equality and inclusivity and proud member of the LGBTIQ+ community\, Rachel is now driving a conversation around cannabis as a catalyst for new economic opportunities\, environmental ingenuity and creation. \nDavid Shoebridge is a member of the Australian Greens and was elected to the Senate as the party’s lead candidate in New South Wales at the 2022 federal election. He previously served in the New South Wales Legislative Council from 2010 to 2022. David is a recognised voice for social justice and public accountability. “It is an extraordinary privilege to represent the Greens in Parliament and to have the capacity to focus on the common good rather than corporate interests.” \nDr Brian Walker: I am a member of the Legislative Council in the Parliament of Western Australia for the Legalise Cannabis Party. I practised medicine for many years in many different countries\, before finally settling into practice as a GP at Serpentine Medical Centre. I have front-line experience treating patients in hospitals\, emergency departments\, and general practice\, including specialising in helping those who come to me seeking help obtaining Cannabis as a natural alternative to opioid-based medication to ease their pain and suffering.

DESCRIPTION:Laugh Mob’s Stoner Stand Up Comedy\nThis year were make history! Laugh mob is celebrating it’s 10 year anniversary of coming to the Nimbin MardiGrass festival by bringing you the best acts to perform at Stoner Stand Up Comedy every night of the festival! Have a toke and come listen to to our jokes with a massive international line up hosted by the King of Nimbin Kyle Legacy (UK)! Acts include Ruven Govender (RSA)\, Matty B (bogan philosopher)\, Vanessa Larry Mitchell (Teardrops on my dildo)\, Gavin Scott (the comedy store)\, Artie Gallagher (Sydney fringe) & more. \nKyle Legacy (UK) – King of the Riff Kyle Legacy lives for the stage! Born & raised in Liverpool\, he now tours the the globe with the popular comedy collective ‘Laugh Mob’. More commonly known as ‘The crowdwork King’\, Legacy has been making appearances at every major festival around the world including the world record holder for most gigs done at the Edinburgh fringe festival… 230 in 24 days! Known as one of the best MCs in the UK\, Kyle is a passed comic at hot water comedy club and this year alone has hosted all the big clubs in Sydney\, Perth\, Melbourne\, Edinburgh\, England\, Estonia\, etc. There’s no room he can’t work. Other credits include opened for Erik Griffin (Workaholichs)\, performed at the comedy store in 3 different countries and Sold Out Edinburgh fringe festival 2017\, 2023 & Perth fringeworld 2021. “The young Ross Noble” ★★★★★ – The funny Tonne “The LeBron James of comedy” ★★★★½ – The Australia \nRuven Govender (RSA) As seen on ‘First Dates’\, Edinburgh Fringe festival\, Sydney comedy festival\, stunt man in training. Times As seen on Russell Brand’s hit TV show Brand X. \nMatty B acknowledged he was a bogan when he realised he owned a ‘going-out’ flanno. Having grown- up in a country town near Newcastle\, he makes full use of his upbringing and experiences from stories about growing up with a father who was a Doctor in Psychology\, to delivering pizzas while stoned as a seventeen year old boy. Despite his self-proclaimed ‘bogan’ tag\, Matty makes use of the token Aussie Racist and dumb Queenslander labels\, commenting on everyday trends such as Aldi’s ‘specials’ and school playground speed limits. Matty B’s style can only be described as casual and unashamed. His humour is dark\, twisted\, vulgar (in the best kind of way)\, surreal and very abstract. \nGavin Scott is a Comedian. Gavin is from Sydney. Gavin likes to drink. Gavin knows a little too much about UFOs & Conspiracies and other weird stuff in general. Gavin will now combine comedy and his knowledge by channelling that energy creatively instead of spending many nights in online forums and hiding from you know who… you know. This is a comedian for the curious as Gavin explores paranormal topics as well as belief structures and  even himself. Gavin wants to believe… and so should you. \n\nVanessa Larry Mitchell is a successful comic\, emcee and event coordinator\, running five of her own successful rooms in the Northern Rivers\, NSW region. Vanesa enjoys pushing the boundaries and breaking down social norms\, by saying those things women shouldn’t say in public\, but we all think! Her show\, Teardrops on My Dildo\, was the Winner Best Comedy 2022 Newcastle Fringe. Fabulous\, filthy and downright hilarious! Brace yourselves for a wild ride of side-splitting hilarity with the modern-day Queen of Sass\, as she takes you on a laugh-out-loud adventure of her trials and tribulations of parenting\, dating and all things female. \n\n\nLoud and making his Grandma proud\, Artie Gallagher is an upcoming fast talking comedian from Sydney.

SUMMARY:4:20 Stoner Blaze
DESCRIPTION:4:20 in 2024….. the Stoner SuperB owl . . . .  wOOt\n\nWelcome to the Earth’s longest running “Four Twenty” Demonstration. Every year since 1999 this event has reverberated around the web (and the world) in such a way that it has become one of the\, if not the\, coolest political demonstration that one can participate in on the planet\, anywhere\, any time\, all time\, ever.\nBig words? Perhaps\, but until you see\, hear and smell the fun as the Big Joint bounces up and down and up up up through a fog of smoke\, nothing I can write here in the program\, would convince you that I am\, if anything\, understating the coolness of the experience.  \nTraditionally\, Four Twenty is the time we take control of the street! aka OCCUPY.  \nStand shoulder-to-shoulder with fellow cannabis lovers and light whatever you have in your hand\, and let’s appreciate that all around the world millions upon millions of people are now smoking Cannabis “out loud and proud” at Four Twenty every day of the week\, month and year in every social setting.  \nAt Four Twenty everyone ought to be thinking Pot for Peace and Peace for Pot and ways to achieve it. Thank each other for bravery in the face of what can seem at times to be overwhelming opposition\, and for standing strong against those who think cannabis is a problem. Thank each other for spreading the word that cannabis is part of the solution. Now take this vibe out into the world and tell everyone you meet that there is a tribal wave of change coming. And most important of all\, tell everyone you meet for the next 364 days everything you learned at the Nimbin MardiGrass!! [More at bigjoint.org] \n“I dream that one day in the not too distant future\, everyone will be outside in the streets\, in every work place and outside every house at 4:20 smoking pot. If not smoking it\, then perhaps just THINKING Pot for Peace & Peace for Pot. On that day\, at that time and from then on\, our world will be at Peace.” Max Stone

SUMMARY:Kombi Konvoy
DESCRIPTION:…rolls up in Nimbin @ 4.20 pm Saturday 4 May\nHaving wended its way from Byron Bay. \nLine the street to welcome up to 100 kombis!\n  \n\n\nAbout the MardiGrass Kombi Konvoy\nMardiGrass 1996 was very important in a number of ways. It was a five day event to include Wednesday the 1st of May\, and it included the first Kombi Konvoy which opened the protest. Over the past three decades the amazing Kombi Konvoy has continued as a proud MardiGrass tradition. A procession of variously decorated Kombi vans winds its way from the coast at Byron Bay to nearby Lismore and arrives at 4.20pm in Nimbin led by Chibo\, the Hemp Olympix torchbearer. In the 1990s the Kombis would park in a circle for the opening ceremony while in recent years their arrival heralds the start of the 420 Stoner Blaze.

SUMMARY:It’s high time we legalised pot
DESCRIPTION:About: It’s been 25 years since the 1999 NSW drug summit which was delivered less than two months into Bob Carr’s term as Premier. More than a year after Labor took office\, in 2024 we still don’t have a date for the promised NSW drug summit. Premier Chris Minns argued passionately for the legalisation of cannabis when Labor was in opposition\, saying that ending prohibition would make cannabis “safer\, less potent and less criminal.” But since Labor took office\, the Minns Government is tripping over itself to pass reactionary laws which make it easier to lock up kids\, particularly First Nations\, deferring all consideration of any reform of our archaic drug laws until after a drug summit\, and then dragging its feet on actually holding one! Join Cate and Jeremy to discuss how to deal with this Labor government back flip and offer far more sensible and effective approaches to drug law reform in NSW.\n \nSpeakers: Cate Faehrmann\, NSW Greens MLC \n& Jeremy Buckingham\, NSW Legalise Cannabis MLC\nBiographies: \nJeremy Buckingham: Over two decades I’ve been a passionate advocate for community\, the environment and common-sense laws that serve the needs of the people. \n

SUMMARY:TAIAHA
DESCRIPTION:Whether holding it down solo or backed by a band\, this versatile Hiphop artist mixes his childhood soul singing favourites and reggae tempos into his own style of vocalism. Both these genres helped build Hiphop\, and beyond that is the spiritual element\, the folk element\, the music for the people. TAIAHA transcends the genres that are so important to culture and industry and breaks them down to their most basic form; frequency and language. The meaning of the words and the feeling of the music. Making the move from one hundred percent DIY production to working with his full versatility on a range of different sounds\, TAIAHA has shown his power with such singles as Age Of Snitches and Grow Some Flowers. This all deepens with his new album God Gave Me Courage. TAIAHA’s Sophomore album GOD GAVE ME COURAGE takes a courageous approach to pushing the envelope of the VOCAL dynamic in Australian Hip-Hop while maintaining authenticity to original style. \nhttps://www.instagram.com/taiahamusic/

SUMMARY:Hard Labor: Working with Labor Governments in NSW and Victoria
DESCRIPTION:About: Jeremy and David will discuss their lessons from working with Labor Governments in pursuit of cannabis reform and the processes of government business. They are also interested in exploring what this means for defining a cannabis community political platform. \nJeremy Buckingham\, Legalise Cannabis Party \nDavid Ettershank\, Legalise Cannabis Victoria\nDavid’s Bio: Before his election as an LCV member of the Legislation Council in the 2022 Victorian election\, David was working in the consulting practice he co-founded\, supporting not-for-profit aged care providers with strong links to specialist\, CALD and regional services. SUMMARY:Introduction to mushroom cultivation
DESCRIPTION:About: This workshop will cover some basic cultivation techniques\, from growing mushrooms on cardboard\, through to growing mushrooms from food grade buckets. By growing your own mushrooms at home you can supplement your diet with delicious home grown food\, or grow fungi that are known traditionally to support both physical and mental health. \nThe language and techniques used in mycology can be confronting for many\, but Caine has a relaxed teaching style\, mixing both relaxed backyard “teks” and formal lab techniques. Guided by the mushroom lifecycle\, Caine frames mushroom cultivation in an easy-to-understand context\, covering what is needed to be successful in a home kitchen environment. The workshop will have time for open Q&A. \nSpeaker: Caine Barlow\, Guerilla Mycology\nBio: Caine Barlow is a Fungi Educator and Mycologist based in Melbourne\, Australia. He has a Bachelor of Science from the University of Tasmania\, and a Master of Science from the University of Melbourne. Caine also has qualifications in horticulture and permaculture. He works closely with the Australian organisation Entheogenesis Australis\, and is a co-founder of US-based organisation The Entheome Foundation. \nCaine started foraging mushrooms in the early 1990’s\, and has been cultivating gourmet fungi since the mid 2000’s. Caine has taught mushroom cultivation through private workshops\, through mycological societies\, at Entheogenesis Australis events\, with Fungi Academy\, and at numerous mushroom themed events. He has co-written and delivered workshops with Mycommunity Applied Mycology\, and co-wrote and delivered content for DoubleBlind’s 102 Mushroom cultivation course. Caine is a mentor for Milkwood for their online Mushroom Cultivation course. \nHe has written for Entheogenesis Australis\, DoubleBlind\, ThirdWave\, MicroDose\, and Healing Maps. Caine is currently working on a book project\, expected to be released May 2024! He is an admin and moderator on many Facebook fungi groups. In addition to fungi\, he has had a long-term interest in ethnobotany\, ethnobotanical literature\, and growing medicinal plants. \nFind him on Instagram\, @guerrillamycology. His website is www.guerrillamycology.com \nMardiGrass is also all about sensible law reform for ALL drugs\, so this year we will partner with Entheogenesis Australis [EGA] to present a program dedicated to other medicinal plants. SUMMARY:Responsible use of cannabis in pregnancy
DESCRIPTION:About: Using cannabis during pregnancy can certainly cause controversy in Australia\, but is using cannabis responsibly (for medical purposes) during pregnancy to help with nausea\, vomiting\, indigestion and reflux really cause for concern? SUMMARY:The Adventures of The Good Bloke
DESCRIPTION:About: Fiona Patten in conversation with Charles ‘The Good Bloke’ Staunton. \nCharles Staunton was a good cop. Until he got sacked from the police force and sent to jail for refusing to inform on his mates. On both sides of the law that loyalty makes Charlie a ‘good bloke’. And in a world of shadows\, where trust is the highest currency\, a good bloke is worth his weight in gold. Charlie becomes a private detective and Mr Fix-it in Sydney’s underworld. His associates are colourful\, their adventures hair-raising. The good times roll the good bloke around the world\, into fancy hotels and fast-lane living… then smack-bang into the Pacific Mariner Cartel. Cool under pressure and handy in a gunfight\, Charlie becomes ‘The Prince’ – a master of disguise and mythic smuggler of millions to all corners of the earth. Until the DEA kicks down the door and arrests him in one of the biggest drug busts in history. \nSpeakers:\nCharles Staunton & Fiona Patten\, Leader\, Reason Party\nBorn in a London taxi in 1958\, Charles Staunton emigrated to Sydney with his family in 1965. He joined NSW Police in 1978 but was drummed out in 1987 after refusing to ‘grass’ on colleagues. Charles built a career as a private investigator and Mr Fix-It in Sydney and then a globetrotting money smuggler for the Pacific Mariner Cartel. In 1997 in Montreal Charles was arrested by the DEA for trafficking 25 tonnes of hashish worth over one billion dollars. He served three and a half years in a supermax prison before moving to London. He has two sons\, four grandchildren and lives in London.
