DESCRIPTION:…rolls up in Nimbin @ 4.20 pm Saturday 4 May\nHaving wended its way from Byron Bay. \nLine the street to welcome up to 100 kombis!\n  \n\n\nAbout the MardiGrass Kombi Konvoy\nMardiGrass 1996 was very important in a number of ways. It was a five day event to include Wednesday the 1st of May\, and it included the first Kombi Konvoy which opened the protest. Over the past three decades the amazing Kombi Konvoy has continued as a proud MardiGrass tradition. A procession of variously decorated Kombi vans winds its way from the coast at Byron Bay to nearby Lismore and arrives at 4.20pm in Nimbin led by Chibo\, the Hemp Olympix torchbearer. In the 1990s the Kombis would park in a circle for the opening ceremony while in recent years their arrival heralds the start of the 420 Stoner Blaze.

More than a year after Labor took office\, in 2024 we still don’t have a date for the promised NSW drug summit. Premier Chris Minns argued passionately for the legalisation of cannabis when Labor was in opposition\, saying that ending prohibition would make cannabis “safer\, less potent and less criminal.” But since Labor took office\, the Minns Government is tripping over itself to pass reactionary laws which make it easier to lock up kids\, particularly First Nations\, deferring all consideration of any reform of our archaic drug laws until after a drug summit\, and then dragging its feet on actually holding one! SUMMARY:Introduction to mushroom cultivation
DESCRIPTION:About: This workshop will cover some basic cultivation techniques\, from growing mushrooms on cardboard\, through to growing mushrooms from food grade buckets. By growing your own mushrooms at home you can supplement your diet with delicious home grown food\, or grow fungi that are known traditionally to support both physical and mental health. \nThe language and techniques used in mycology can be confronting for many\, but Caine has a relaxed teaching style\, mixing both relaxed backyard “teks” and formal lab techniques. Guided by the mushroom lifecycle\, Caine frames mushroom cultivation in an easy-to-understand context\, covering what is needed to be successful in a home kitchen environment. The workshop will have time for open Q&A. \nSpeaker: Caine Barlow\, Guerilla Mycology\nBio: Caine Barlow is a Fungi Educator and Mycologist based in Melbourne\, Australia. He has a Bachelor of Science from the University of Tasmania\, and a Master of Science from the University of Melbourne. Caine also has qualifications in horticulture and permaculture. He works closely with the Australian organisation Entheogenesis Australis\, and is a co-founder of US-based organisation The Entheome Foundation. \nCaine started foraging mushrooms in the early 1990’s\, and has been cultivating gourmet fungi since the mid 2000’s. Caine has taught mushroom cultivation through private workshops\, through mycological societies\, at Entheogenesis Australis events\, with Fungi Academy\, and at numerous mushroom themed events. He has co-written and delivered workshops with Mycommunity Applied Mycology\, and co-wrote and delivered content for DoubleBlind’s 102 Mushroom cultivation course. Caine is a mentor for Milkwood for their online Mushroom Cultivation course. \nHe has written for Entheogenesis Australis\, DoubleBlind\, ThirdWave\, MicroDose\, and Healing Maps. Caine is currently working on a book project\, expected to be released May 2024! He is an admin and moderator on many Facebook fungi groups. DESCRIPTION:About: Using cannabis during pregnancy can certainly cause controversy in Australia\, but is using cannabis responsibly (for medical purposes) during pregnancy to help with nausea\, vomiting\, indigestion and reflux really cause for concern? In this one on one interview\, Dr Jeffrey Herganrather\, an experienced medical cannabis physician with a background in OBGYN\, Paediatrics and Neonatal care\, will weed out the myths from the facts. \nSpeakers: Dr Jeffrey Hergenrather and Rebecca Houghton\n\nJeffrey Hergenrather is a general practitioner specializing in cannabis/cannabinoid medicine since 1999. His medial experience includes 26 years in emergency medicine and private general practice. His involvement in the field of cannabinoid medicine date back to 1977. He continues in a consultation practice in northern California with face-to-face\, telephone\, and on-line consultations for the use of cannabis as medicine. Dr. Hergenrather’s practice\, research\, and teaching focus on the medicinal use of cannabis through a wide range of conditions and age groups – from infants to end-of-life care. He is an adjunct professor at Sonoma State University teaching a Biology course in the Medical Use of Cannabis. \nHe is a founding member and past-president of the Society of Cannabis Clinicians (SCC)\, a non – profit corporation dedicated to quality patient care\, education\, and clinical studies. The SCC is the oldest organization of physicians specializing in the use of cannabis as medicine. Hergenrather is a member of the International Alliance for Cannabinoid Medicines (IACM)\, and the International Cannabinoid Research Society (ICRS). He serves as an expert witness and consultant to government and industry in supporting safe access to measured cannabis medicines. \n\nRebecca Houghton is an International speaker\, Mental Health & Drug Reform Advocate and Health & Wellness Coach. She has worked with clients from a wide variety of backgrounds\, including veterans\, entrepreneurs\, high net worth CEO’s\, medical professionals\, and celebrity A-Listers. She shares her real life experience of treating and managing both complex and combat post traumatic stress and subscribes to a unique heuristic and holistic model for mental health care\, over a pharmaceutical prescription. While living in the United States\, she worked in the legal Cannabis Industry\, trained as a MDMA practitioner and co-facilitated over 50 sessions. As Co-founder and former Director of the ex-service organisation\, Weeded Warrior\, she advocated politically for Medicinal Cannabis and MDMA therapy legalisation in Australia and successfully championed the Department of Veterans Affairs to cover Medicinal Cannabis for Veterans. \n

He joined NSW Police in 1978 but was drummed out in 1987 after refusing to ‘grass’ on colleagues. Charles built a career as a private investigator and Mr Fix-It in Sydney and then a globetrotting money smuggler for the Pacific Mariner Cartel. In 1997 in Montreal Charles was arrested by the DEA for trafficking 25 tonnes of hashish worth over one billion dollars. He served three and a half years in a supermax prison before moving to London. He has two sons\, four grandchildren and lives in London. \nFiona Patten is the leader of the Reason Party and was a member of the Victorian Legislative Council between 2014 and 2022\, until she lost her seat at the 2022 state election. She recently received an honourable mentioned by the McKinnon Prize Shortlisting Committee\, an independent\, non-partisan award that acknowledges outstanding political leadership across the political spectrum. Patten established the Australian Sex Party in 2009 to focus on personal freedoms after deep frustration with stagnation on censorship\, Marriage Equality and drug law reform. In 2017\, the Australian Sex Party changed its name to the Reason Party. During her time as a Victorian MP\, Fiona has been credited for playing pivotal roles in achieving social reforms in Victoria\, with examples including the passage of Victoria’s assisted dying legislation\, and the trial of a medically supervised drug injecting room in Richmond.

He is interested in the potential benefits of psychedelics and has a passion for harm reduction and advocacy. We’ve recently heard from the International HEMP Olympix Committee (IHOC) official S Sorrensen that a major change to the HEMP Olympix program has come down from IHOC HQ in Brussels. It seems several of last year’s Nimbin Iron Grower Person Event contestants had taken an inordinately long time to recover and one\, a medallist\, has still not recovered. IHOC official Alan Glover (yes\, there are two IHOC officials in Australia) said\, “While we are still battling the consequences of the drug war with illegal unregulated chemical drugs on the street\, the committee has decided this event must be suspended until the war is over and respect for drug use returns.” After due consideration by the IHOC\, plans are afoot for a replacement gold-medal event reflecting the change from outdoor to indoor growing\, another drug war impact. The Dealer’s Nightmare will be a team event testing quick and accurate reactions to police raids . . . check back for more details. \nIn exciting news\, the IHOC is also considering including Correct Weight as an official HEMP Olympix event this year after its growing popularity in the Fringe Olympix. We know\, of course\, the modern Hemp Olympix began in 1896 in Athens\, attended by 84 athletes\, 600 spectators and 2115 police. \nWe also know that the modern Hemp Olympix was the relighting of the original classical Hemp Olympix played at the base of Mount Olympus more than 2500 years ago\, when the Greeks chucked bongs in the nude\, joints were rolled with papyrus and the results recorded on vellum. \nCannabis has always been a key element in the evolution of humanity from tree-dwelling primate to upstanding human. \nSome evolutionary biologists speculate that the development of an opposable thumb in Homo habilis 2.3 million years ago was due to joint rolling. \nEvolutionary theorist Professor Niger Umber theorises that it was in order to harvest the top heads of Cannabis sativa that caused the early human to stand upright. \nCannabis has been essential part of the human story. And so too has sport. Hence the Hemp Olympix. \nIn 776 BC\, the first official Hemp Olympix was held at Olympia\, in Greece. Featuring the three traditional sporting disciplines – Bong Throw & Yell\, Iron Growerperson Event and Joint Roll – these games were held every four years in honour of Zeus\, the God of Competition\, and Cannabi\, the Goddess of Pot. The athletes\, from all over the known world\, performed naked\, and the winners were given a wreath of Cannabis leaves as a prize to be enjoyed later. \nThe first modern Hemp Olympix was held in Athens\, Greece\, in 1896. \nThe International Hemp Olympix Committee (IHOC)\, formed in 1894\, determined that the modern Hemp Olympix would be an event open to all nationalities and genders to celebrate sport\, Cannabis and the human body. \nThe 1896 Athens Hemp Olympix was a huge success. \nAfter that first Hemp Olympix\, the Games flourished\, being held every four years\, as was the ancient custom. But the IHOC decided in 1904 that the Hemp Olympix would be held in different towns and cities around the world. \nThe Hemp Olympix now attracts teams from around the world\, from Portugal (where Cannabis is legal and the Portugese Hemp Olympix team is funded with money saved from dropping the War on Drugs) to Russia (where war and government are funded by the War on Drugs). \nIn May\, 1993\, the Hemp Olympix was held for the first time in Australia\, in a village called Nimbin\, as a sporting resistance to a tyrannical suppression of the burning bush funded by climate change denial and alcoholic dementia. \nSince then\, 135 countries have hosted the Hemp Olympix. \nNimbin has vowed to host a MardiGrass Hemp Olympix every year until the ridiculous laws of Cannabis prohibition are repealed. \nIn 2003\, two Australian blokes became international Hemp Olympix Officials\, having undergone their Integrity Assessment\, having passed their Knowledge of the Rules and Etiquette for the Games of the Hemp Olympix Examination\, and having received a very positive result in their Drug Test. \nAlan Glover and S Sorrensen now spend their time travelling to Hemp Olympix around the world\, making sure the rules and ethics of the games are adhered to. \nThey officiate at the annual Hemp Olympix at the Nimbin MardiGrass where athletes from around the globe compete for prizes\, glory and the sheer fun of it. \nYou too can celebrate all that is good in humanity\, make fun of all that is ridiculous (like the marijuana laws)\, and have stories to tell the kids\, by being a athlete in the Hemp Olympix. She has worked with clients from a wide variety of backgrounds\, including veterans\, entrepreneurs\, high net worth CEO’s\, medical professionals\, and celebrity A-Listers. She shares her real life experience of treating and managing both complex and combat post traumatic stress and subscribes to a unique heuristic and holistic model for mental health care\, over a pharmaceutical prescription. While living in the United States\, she worked in the legal Cannabis Industry\, trained as a MDMA practitioner and co-facilitated over 50 sessions. As Co-founder and former Director of the ex-service organisation\, Weeded Warrior\, she advocated politically for Medicinal Cannabis and MDMA therapy legalisation in Australia and successfully championed the Department of Veterans Affairs to cover Medicinal Cannabis for Veterans. \nJames Bennett-Levy has recently taken up a research position as Professor at Southern Cross University. As a trainer\, researcher\, and writer\, he has an international reputation\, having taught in 27 countries and co-written 5 books for therapists. These books have been translated into 12 languages. He is one of the world’s most published researchers on therapist training\, with groundbreaking research on his self-practice/self-reflection (SP/SR) approach to training (2001-23) and key theoretical papers on personal practice for therapists (2018-19) and therapist skill development (2006-14). Recently\, he has turned his attention to psychedelic-assisted therapy (PAT). He is a Chief Investigator on a PAT clinical trial and is developing PAT-based research at Southern Cross University. \nSymon Beck is a mushroom enthusiast with over ten years of experience foraging and eating many different species of fungi on Australia’s East Coast. He has a particular interest in Psilocybe and other psychoactive species\, and helps run the PMANZ group on Facebook. He is the secretary of the Australian Psychedelic Society. He is interested in the potential benefits of psychedelics and has a passion for harm reduction and advocacy. Symon’s academic background is in medicine and psychiatry. \nMicha Lerner has extensive experience in drug and alcohol rehabilitation\, working for both private and public practices\, as well as establishing his own clinic. Micha has a Masters of Arts (Psychology) and Bachelor of Social Science (Honours) Psychology from Bond University and a Bachelor of Arts (Behavioural Science and Communication) from The College of Management Academic Studies\, Tel Aviv. Micha was head psychologist at The Sanctuary between 2015 and 2018\, has worked at private drug and alcohol treatment service The Bay Retreat\, and provided psychological services to the Gold Coast Drug Council. Micha has a keen interest in the effects of drugs and alcohol on the brain\, particularly psychedelic drugs\, and has lectured in psychopharmacology at Bond University and had research on the subject published in prestigious medical journals. Originally from Israel\, Micha emigrated to Australia in 2001. A yoga devotee and a former international surf champion\, he enjoys catching the world-class waves at Lennox Head. \nMartin Williams is the Executive Director and Co-founder of Psychedelic Research in Science and Medicine (PRISM)\, Research Fellow in Psychology at Swinburne University and in Computational Neuroscience at the Turner Institute of Brain and Mental Health at Monash University. Martin is a founding member of Entheogenesis Australis (EGA)\, an educational charity focused on the historical use and societal impacts of medicinal plants and chemicals. Martin is co-lead on the St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne Phase 2 trial of psilocybin-assisted therapy for depression and anxiety associated with terminal illness\, and co-investigator on the upcoming Melbourne multi-institutional psilocybin trial for treatment-resistant depression and Edith Cowan University MDMA trial for PTSD. In his spare time\, Martin has an avid interest as an aircraft pilot. \nMardiGrass is also all about sensible law reform for ALL drugs\, so this year we will partner with Entheogenesis Australis [EGA] to present a program dedicated to other medicinal plants. DESCRIPTION:About: At this Mardigrass\, together with the Northern Rivers Hemp Coop\, I am proud to present beads and jewellery made from 100% hemp. Hempstone is made in Nimbin from local hemp fibre\, pigments and water and nothing else. So now you say this fantastic\, super strong material should just be hemp fibre and water\, no glue\, resin or other chemicals involved in making it…? Since it’s all super secret…. I will tell you so much: the secret word is Nano-cellulose\, a sustainable solution for a long needed circular economy\, slowly popping out of  laboratories around the world… \nNow following sounds easy\, but it has been decades of research and development: I wet mill hemp fibres till they are micro\, nano small to create a porridge like pulp and doing so\, I increase the amount of natural OH bonding capacity between the hemp fibres. I then colour with hemp charcoal  and or earth pigments and mould the hemp pulp into shape. As the pulp dries\, the  nano-fibres entangle and get closer to each other\, the OH bonds lock in\, and lock in…it shrinks and shrinks and gets harder and harder  Once dried it hardens and shrinks to 1/6 of it’s size….maybe I should call it “Shrinkit”. SUMMARY:The Gatekeepers for Psychedelic Assisted Therapy approval
DESCRIPTION:About: In July 2023\, Australia’s Therapeutic Goods Administration [TGA] designated Human Research Ethics Committees (HRECs) as the gatekeepers determining who gets approval to begin Psychedelic Assisted Therapy [PAT]. The Townsville Hospital HREC did decide to accept applications and approved their first application last November. \nThis presentation will cover: the PAT therapist approval process; the difficulties presented by the way TGA launched their approval of PAT; the knowledge that has been gained in the first year of the TGA scheme; criteria for reviewing a PAT application; working relationships with the TGA; lessons to be gained from those who already have expertise in this field: the Center at Zurich Psychiatric Hospital who have been doing this since the 80s and the preeminent research center in the US (Mass General Hospital/Harvard Uni); and the effort to coordinate results across Australia. \nSpeaker: Dr Hudson Birden\nHudson Birden is Chair of the Human Research Ethics Committee and Vice Chair of the Research Development Committee at Townsville University Hospital and Health Service\, Institute of Health Research and Innovation. Simultaneously\, we witness a transformative era where psychedelic and plant medicines gain recognition within medical spheres. With these substances receiving validation from the medical establishment\, it’s crucial to amplify the voices of those with lived experiences and insights from the underground and on the edges of the establishment. \nJoin us to delve into the impactful work of Australia’s most compelling not-for-profit organizations\, both above and below ground\, as they navigate the complexities of drug reform\, education\, and advocacy. Jonathan has been working as its primary driver in a volunteer capacity for almost two decades. He is also a founding member of the charity Psychedelic Research in Science & Medicine (PRISM) and is active on their committee. He is also an artistic and freelance photographer\, and his photographic works have been published and shown in a number of galleries. \nMichael Balderstone is the President of Nimbin HEMP Embassy\, Legalise Cannabis Australia (Formerly Australian HEMP Party) & Nimbin MardiGrass and has been campaigning for the legalisation of the plant for over 30 years. The Legalise Cannabis party now boasts five elected members of State governments in Western Australia\, Victoria and NSW. The party’s aim is to “re-legalise and regulate personal\, medical and industrial use” of Cannabis. \nCaine Barlow is a Fungi Educator and Mycologist based in Melbourne\, Australia. He has a Bachelor of Science from the University of Tasmania\, and a Master of Science from the University of Melbourne. Caine also has qualifications in horticulture and permaculture. Sianna-Rose is passionate about research and how entheogens could be used in therapeutic models. Sianna-Rose is also a volunteer and supporter of Entheogenesis Australis. \nDr Martin Williams is a Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Mental Health\, Swinburne University. His research background is in Medicinal Chemistry and Pharmacology. Martin is a co-investigator on a number of Australian clinical trials of psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy\, including the St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne study of psilocybin-assisted psychotherapy in palliative care; the Monash PsiConnect neuroimaging study of psilocybin with mindfulness meditation; the Swinburne pilot study and 3PAP RCT of 2- vs 3-dose psilocybin-assisted therapy for depression; and several other studies of psilocybin\, MDMA and other psychedelics for the treatment of a range of mental health conditions. From strip searches at festivals and your friendly sniffers dogs\, to medical cannabis being the only prescribed medicine which makes it illegal to drive\, please come on a journey into many cruel and unusual laws running rampant in contemporary Oz. \nDavid Heilpern\, Drive Change Campaign\n& Sue Higginson\, NSW Greens MLC\nBiographies: \nDavid Heilpern was appointed as a Magistrate in 1998\, and was at the time the youngest magistrate in Australia. Since “retiring” in May 2020\, he has resumed private practice as a solicitor\, as well as returning to Southern Cross University as an adjunct and practice professor. David is committed to speaking out about drug law reform\, particularly the drug driving detection laws\, to ensure that drug laws change to reflect the principles of harm reduction. In particular\, he believes that harm is only increased by applying a law and order model to victimless crimes. \nSue Higginson is a Greens MLC in the NSW Parliament driven by social and environmental justice. Her journey started in the old-growth forests of the North Coast as a frontline activist and her passion for protecting our precious native forests is just as strong today. Sue is in the NSW Parliament to bring in laws that protect First Nations people and their culture\, to end logging in our public native forests and the destruction of nature\, and to challenge the corporate interests that want coal and gas mining extended and expanded in communities across our state.
