DESCRIPTION:Conversation & Q&A with:\nSianna-Rose Miller (Pixie)\, president of Psychedelically Aware (The PATCH)\n&\nSymon Beck\, Psychedelically Aware (The PATCH) and Australian Psychedelic Society (APS) \nAbout: This discussion walks through the psychedelic experience from preparation to integration. With increasing media attention and clinical research\, there are a lot more people experimenting with psychedelics. Some are seeking to self-treat conditions\, while others are curious to explore themselves in new ways. An honest dialogue around the potential and actual harms reported and ways to reduce them. \nCovering how to make a plan if you are consuming psychedelics within group settings or with a trip sitter\, including preparation\, contraindications\, and understanding of group etiquette. Challenges of tripping with intimate partners or friends\, along with the complexities of consent and sex under the influence. How to care for yourself after a psychedelic experience. Questions to ask and how to spot red flags that may mean a particular facilitator is not a good fit for you. The need for trauma-informed practices and harm minimisation to be incorporated into underground practices. The problem with guruism and why there is a need for our community to address this culture. \nBiographies \nDr Symon Beck is a mushroom enthusiast with over ten years of experience foraging and eating many different species of fungi on Australia’s East Coast. He has a particular interest in Psilocybe and other psychoactive species\, and helps run the PMANZ group on Facebook. He is the secretary of the Australian Psychedelic Society. He is interested in the potential benefits of psychedelics and has a passion for harm reduction and advocacy. Symon’s academic background is in medicine and psychiatry. \nSianna-Rose (Pixie) – is the founder of the Psychedelically Aware harm minimisation network and The PATCH – The Psychedelically Aware Talking Circle Hub. Having studied psychology and health science\, while pursuing postgraduate neuroscience\, she has a broad understanding of how entheogens affect both the body and mind. Sianna-Rose is passionate about research and how entheogens could be used in therapeutic models. Sianna-Rose is also a volunteer and supporter of Entheogenesis Australis.\nMardiGrass is also all about sensible law reform for ALL drugs\, so this year we will partner with Entheogenesis Australis [EGA] to present a program dedicated to other medicinal plants. Don’t miss it! 10am – 10pm Saturday 4 May in the Town Hall Garden.

SUMMARY:Hemp Olympix
DESCRIPTION:Sometime in the mid 90s\, Chibo\, Bob and Michael walked into the Hemp Bar and decided that Mardigrass needed events which would entertain as well as educate\, and the Hemp Olympix were born!! \n \n11:30 am : Hemp Olympix registration\nRegister at Sativa Stadium for the Hemp Olympix! $2 Entry into all HEMP Olympix Events. \n\n\n\n12 pm : Tug O’ Drug Peace\nLegal Weed versus Bush Buds with the Big Hemp Rope! \nSadly the police have declined our invitation to compete in this famous event. Well\, it IS a bit embarrassing to keep losing to the stoners! Maybe they’ll change their mind\, but if not\, we’ll have a battle between those use legal weed and those who smoke bush buds. The tug is followed by . . . \n12.30 pm : Hemp Olympix Bong Throw & Yell and then the Growers Ironperson Events\nHosted by S Sorrensen and Alan Glover \nBong Throw & Yell: Entrants throw a bong full of stinking water as far as possible whilst yelling “Free the Weed!” or a similar sentiment. \nOver 50s Bong Throw & Yell: The older I get\, the better I was. \nGrowers Ironperson: Involves lugging a sack of fertiliser and buckets of water around the simulated growing area obstacle course with a tick and leech infested lantana tunnel. The men’s event is a 40kg sack while the women contend with an 18kg sack. The top 5 crawl into the final on Sunday. \nThe Dealer’s Nightmare – a new event in 2024? We’ve recently heard from the International HEMP Olympix Committee (IHOC) official S Sorrensen that a major change to the HEMP Olympix program has come down from IHOC HQ in Brussels. It seems several of last year’s Nimbin Iron Grower Person Event contestants had taken an inordinately long time to recover and one\, a medallist\, has still not recovered. IHOC official Alan Glover (yes\, there are two IHOC officials in Australia) said\, “While we are still battling the consequences of the drug war with illegal unregulated chemical drugs on the street\, the committee has decided this event must be suspended until the war is over and respect for drug use returns.” After due consideration by the IHOC\, plans are afoot for a replacement gold-medal event reflecting the change from outdoor to indoor growing\, another drug war impact. The Dealer’s Nightmare will be a team event testing quick and accurate reactions to police raids . . . check back for more details. \nIn exciting news\, the IHOC is also considering including Correct Weight as an official HEMP Olympix event this year after its growing popularity in the Fringe Olympix. Contestants aim to to fill a baggie with exactly 28.3 grams. Correct weight keeps the bag. \nFollowed by the . . . \n2.30 pm : Fringe Hemp Olympix \nHosted by the Laugh Mob and Baldenstoned\n \n \nThis begins with the Beard and Dread Stash. How much can you hide in your hair anywhere? Followed by Correct Weight where contestants attempt to fill a baggie with as close to an ounce as possible\, 28.349 grams.  Seed Sorting\, and the crutch and wheelchair obstacle course where contestants will attempt to score a Licence To Care*. \n* Extremely rare and almost impossible to get in Australia! \n5 pm : HEMP Olympix Joint Rolling [in the Town Hall!]\nHosted by S.Sorensen and Alan Glover \nMust burn from one end to another! The 4 Categories: \nSpeed Roll – Roll a standard 3-paper joint as fast as you can. Joints must include a cardboard filter or will be judged incomplete. \nArtistic Roll – Roll the most beautiful joint within 10 minutes with as many papers as you like. \nRoll in the Dark – Athletes are blindfolded. \nAdverse Conditions Roll – Dependent on weather conditions on the day and the judges’ creativity. \n\nHEMP OLYMPIX – Sport with meaning                                      \nS Sorrensen \nIt’s difficult to determine exactly when the Hemp Olympix began. We know\, of course\, the modern Hemp Olympix began in 1896 in Athens\, attended by 84 athletes\, 600 spectators and 2115 police. \nWe also know that the modern Hemp Olympix was the relighting of the original classical Hemp Olympix played at the base of Mount Olympus more than 2500 years ago\, when the Greeks chucked bongs in the nude\, joints were rolled with papyrus and the results recorded on vellum. \nCannabis has always been a key element in the evolution of humanity from tree-dwelling primate to upstanding human. \nSome evolutionary biologists speculate that the development of an opposable thumb in Homo habilis 2.3 million years ago was due to joint rolling. \nEvolutionary theorist Professor Niger Umber theorises that it was in order to harvest the top heads of Cannabis sativa that caused the early human to stand upright. \nCannabis has been essential part of the human story. And so too has sport. Hence the Hemp Olympix. \nIn 776 BC\, the first official Hemp Olympix was held at Olympia\, in Greece. Featuring the three traditional sporting disciplines – Bong Throw & Yell\, Iron Growerperson Event and Joint Roll – these games were held every four years in honour of Zeus\, the God of Competition\, and Cannabi\, the Goddess of Pot. The athletes\, from all over the known world\, performed naked\, and the winners were given a wreath of Cannabis leaves as a prize to be enjoyed later. \nThe first modern Hemp Olympix was held in Athens\, Greece\, in 1896. \nThe International Hemp Olympix Committee (IHOC)\, formed in 1894\, determined that the modern Hemp Olympix would be an event open to all nationalities and genders to celebrate sport\, Cannabis and the human body. \nThe 1896 Athens Hemp Olympix was a huge success. \nAfter that first Hemp Olympix\, the Games flourished\, being held every four years\, as was the ancient custom. But the IHOC decided in 1904 that the Hemp Olympix would be held in different towns and cities around the world. \nThe Hemp Olympix now attracts teams from around the world\, from Portugal (where Cannabis is legal and the Portugese Hemp Olympix team is funded with money saved from dropping the War on Drugs) to Russia (where war and government are funded by the War on Drugs). \nIn May\, 1993\, the Hemp Olympix was held for the first time in Australia\, in a village called Nimbin\, as a sporting resistance to a tyrannical suppression of the burning bush funded by climate change denial and alcoholic dementia. \nSince then\, 135 countries have hosted the Hemp Olympix. \nNimbin has vowed to host a MardiGrass Hemp Olympix every year until the ridiculous laws of Cannabis prohibition are repealed. \nIn 2003\, two Australian blokes became international Hemp Olympix Officials\, having undergone their Integrity Assessment\, having passed their Knowledge of the Rules and Etiquette for the Games of the Hemp Olympix Examination\, and having received a very positive result in their Drug Test. \nAlan Glover and S Sorrensen now spend their time travelling to Hemp Olympix around the world\, making sure the rules and ethics of the games are adhered to. \nThey officiate at the annual Hemp Olympix at the Nimbin MardiGrass where athletes from around the globe compete for prizes\, glory and the sheer fun of it. \nYou too can celebrate all that is good in humanity\, make fun of all that is ridiculous (like the marijuana laws)\, and have stories to tell the kids\, by being a athlete in the Hemp Olympix. (Just sign up on the day at the Hemp Olympix Sign Up Table.) \nOr you can be a spectator and thrill to a 40-metre Bong Throw & Yell\, have your breath taken away at the speed and grace of a sub-20-second Joint Roll or shake your head at the strength and determination of an Irongrower Person. \nYou can also delve more deeply into the history\, the characters\, and the rules of the Hemp Olympix by purchasing ‘A Spectator’s Guide to the Hemp Olympix’ from the Nimbin Hemp Embassy. \nThrow bong\, live long.

SUMMARY:Hemp Puppet & Hemp Bead Making Workshop
DESCRIPTION:About: At this Mardigrass\, together with the Northern Rivers Hemp Coop\, I am proud to present beads and jewellery made from 100% hemp. Hempstone is made in Nimbin from local hemp fibre\, pigments and water and nothing else. So now you say this fantastic\, super strong material should just be hemp fibre and water\, no glue\, resin or other chemicals involved in making it…? Since it’s all super secret…. I will tell you so much: the secret word is Nano-cellulose\, a sustainable solution for a long needed circular economy\, slowly popping out of  laboratories around the world… \nNow following sounds easy\, but it has been decades of research and development: I wet mill hemp fibres till they are micro\, nano small to create a porridge like pulp and doing so\, I increase the amount of natural OH bonding capacity between the hemp fibres. I then colour with hemp charcoal  and or earth pigments and mould the hemp pulp into shape. As the pulp dries\, the  nano-fibres entangle and get closer to each other\, the OH bonds lock in\, and lock in…it shrinks and shrinks and gets harder and harder  Once dried it hardens and shrinks to 1/6 of it’s size….maybe I should call it “Shrinkit”. The next step is polishing\, followed by coating with linseed oil and Carnauba wax….a piece of art might be created \nBut if you really want to know more\, come to The Northern Rivers Hemp Co-op during Mardigrass and you can learn all about this incredible material. \nSpeaker: Martin Ernegg\, Molecular Sculptor\nBio: Martin’s work and development is an evolving currency. Inventor of the fundamental process used by Zeoform and inspiration to Zelpho-Technology\, his core competence in structural materials made from micro-fibrillated plant fibre\, product development\, engineering\, production\, feasibility and viability projects for structural materials from renewable resources. Martin has more than 20 years experience across multiple disciplines in nano fibre fusion technology and is committed to supporting visions becoming reality for a more sustainable future. \n

SUMMARY:Voices of Change: Exploring Psychedelic Not-for-Profits
DESCRIPTION:Voices of Change: Exploring Psychedelic Not-for-Profits in Drug Law Reform\, Education\, and Advocacy\nAbout: Drug law reform\, advocacy\, and harm reduction manifest through diverse avenues\, yet share a common thread: community engagement. In recent decades\, grassroots movements have evolved into not-for-profit organisations and charities dedicated to challenging the status quo of drug policies and fostering safer\, informed communities. These entities strive to dismantle the stigma surrounding drug use\, creating spaces where individuals can openly discuss altered states and associated behaviours. From the depths of underground networks emerged resilient peer-to-peer organizations that now provide essential support and education for drug users and psychonaughts. Simultaneously\, we witness a transformative era where psychedelic and plant medicines gain recognition within medical spheres. With these substances receiving validation from the medical establishment\, it’s crucial to amplify the voices of those with lived experiences and insights from the underground and on the edges of the establishment. \nJoin us to delve into the impactful work of Australia’s most compelling not-for-profit organizations\, both above and below ground\, as they navigate the complexities of drug reform\, education\, and advocacy. Our esteemed panel guests bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to shed light on the vital contributions of their respective organizations in shaping progressive drug policies and fostering safer\, more informed communities. \nFacilitator: Jonathan Carmichael (Entheogenesis Australis) \nSpeakers: \n\nMichael Balderstone (Nimbin Hemp Embassy)\nCaine Barlow (Entheogenesis Australis)\nSymon Beck (Australian Psychedelic Society)\nSianna-Rose (The PATCH)\nMartin Williams (Psychedelic Research in Science and Medicine)\n\nJonathan Carmichael (Ronny) is an ethnobotanical activist who is interested in social justice and the environment. SUMMARY:Cannabis Laws in Australia
DESCRIPTION:About: This session will discuss Cannabis laws in Australia\, and present a round up of state-by-state drug law reform in 2024. From strip searches at festivals and your friendly sniffers dogs\, to medical cannabis being the only prescribed medicine which makes it illegal to drive\, please come on a journey into many cruel and unusual laws running rampant in contemporary Oz. \nDavid Heilpern\, Drive Change Campaign\n& Sue Higginson\, NSW Greens MLC\nBiographies: \nDavid Heilpern was appointed as a Magistrate in 1998\, and was at the time the youngest magistrate in Australia. Since “retiring” in May 2020\, he has resumed private practice as a solicitor\, as well as returning to Southern Cross University as an adjunct and practice professor. David is committed to speaking out about drug law reform\, particularly the drug driving detection laws\, to ensure that drug laws change to reflect the principles of harm reduction. In particular\, he believes that harm is only increased by applying a law and order model to victimless crimes. \nSue Higginson is a Greens MLC in the NSW Parliament driven by social and environmental justice. Her journey started in the old-growth forests of the North Coast as a frontline activist and her passion for protecting our precious native forests is just as strong today. Dr Hergenrather’s practice\, research\, and teaching focus on the medicinal uses of Cannabis through a wide range of conditions and age groups – from infants to elder care.  He is a founding member and former president of the Society of Cannabis Clinicians\, a non-profit corporation dedicated to quality patient care\, educational programs\, and clinical studies. \nReturning to MardiGrass for the third time is Dr David Bearman\, also from California. In 2024 he will talk on Cannabis and driving\, and how this issue is dealt with in the USA. David is one of the most clinically knowledgeable physicians in the field of pain management and medicinal marijuana\, and was a pioneer in the free and community clinic movement in California. Dr. Bearman is also the author of a number of books including “Cannabis Medicine: A Guide to the Practice of Cannabinoid Medicine” which will be available at a book signing during MardiGrass. \nIn 2024 MardiGrass is excited to welcome 2018 Churchill Fellow\, Tom Forrest\, who will discuss cannabis agronomy in Australia and worldwide including cannabis cultivation facilities\, broad-acre cannabis farms and research centres worldwide. And we’re stoked that Miles Hunt\, the Drug taking Lawyer\, will share the reasons why he ‘came out’ and the effects it had on his career\, reputation and personal relationships. \nThis year’s Hemposium features a “women and weed” theme with Rebecca Houghton interviewing Dr Hergenrather on Cannabis and pregnancy while Legalise Cannabis State MPs\, Rachel Payne\, will discuss therapeutic benefits Cannabis provides for women\, and Sophia Moermond will present a herbalist’s perspective on Cannabis.\n \nThe big discussion point for 2024 around weed legalisation will be “What’s Next?” Leading Cannabis law reform politicians from the Greens and Legalise Cannabis [LC] parties will discuss their efforts around roadside drug testing\, adult use\, removing past cannabis convictions\, fixing the medicinal cannabis scheme\, and decriminalising psychedelics. \nLong-time MardiGrass supporter\, Federal Senator David Shoebridge\, along with Richmond Greens candidate\, Mandy Nolan\, will share the Greens steps towards legalising Cannabis federally. \nNSW State MLCs\, Jeremy Buckingham [LC] and Cate Faehrmann [Greens] will team up for a discussion on how to invoke meaningful drug law reform in NSW\, and what we might get out of the proposed Drug Summit. Jeremy will also chair a session on the new NSW Hemp Industry Taskforce\, established to support producers and growers in the expanding hemp industry. \nGreens NSW MLC Sue Higginson and poet and ex-magistrate\, David Heilpern\, will discuss Cannabis laws in Australia along with a legal advice Q&A. \nVictoria’s LC State MPs\, Rachel Payne and David Ettershank will share their experience in pursuing Cannabis law reform in that state over the last 18 months. They will be joined by LC “veteran” from Western Australia\, Dr Brian Walker\, who will present how things are progressing for Cannabis in the Wild West. \nOther Legalise Cannabis members\, including Dr Jim Moylan\, will provide their vision on pathways to cannabis legalisation\, and possible new law reform options. \nWe are also honoured to announce that John Shipton\, Julian Assange’s father\, will speak at MardiGrass 2024 about the importance of journalistic freedom as a cornerstone of a thriving democracy against dangerous tyranny. \nAlso join Dr John Teh and Chloe Jean Teh\, from PlantMed Medicinal Cannabis\, for a medical cannabis Q&A. John and Chloe have been working within the Medicinal Cannabis industry since the legalisation of cannabis for medicinal use in Australia in February 2016. \nThis year’s Mardigrass Industrial HEMP Expo\, located outside Nthn Rivers Hemp in Cullen Street\,will feature puppet making and hempstone jewellery workshops by molecular sculptor Martin Ernegg; interactive farming tips and tricks from Hanna and Leon Hemp Threads; and the Hempies will host a panel on hemp innovations in product development and improvement free ranging over the exciting future landscape for hemp. Demos all weekend by The Hemp Club and Northern Rivers Hemp Growers Co-op featuring special guests\, The paper tiger\, Dion Channing and Robert Tonks CEO Australian Hardwood Charcoal Products. \nAnd a massive shout out to MardiGrass legends and stalwart supporters of Cannabis law reform who will share their expertise and inspiration again with us in 2024: legendary master gardeners\, Tony Mullaways\, and Kog\, as well as veteran healers\, “Dr Pot” Andrew Katelaris and Radic Al Conscious. Hemp Historian John Jiggens\, will return to remind us of the murky world of the Mackay murder and NSW drug laws. \nIt’s time this magnificent herb was welcomed into mainstream Australian life\, and the persecution and prejudice to stop. It’s time for Oz to open up to Adult Use Cannabis! In 2013 Uruguay became the first country in the world to legalize the sale\, cultivation\, and distribution of recreational cannabis\, with Canada launching legalisation in 2018. With Thailand grooving into the green dream in 2022\, Germany has recently flipped the recreational switch in early 2024. There are now a total of ten countries and 24 states in the USA which have legalised Adult Use Cannabis since 2012. Australia is slowly catching on and toking up. \nThe 2024 MardiGrass Hemposium is a space to inform\, learn\, agitate\, inspire and connect in this massively important green revolution. Join us to help OVERGROW THE GOVERNMENT! \n2024 Program Partner: Entheogenesis Australis [EGA]

SUMMARY:TAIAHA
DESCRIPTION:Whether holding it down solo or backed by a band\, this versatile Hiphop artist mixes his childhood soul singing favourites and reggae tempos into his own style of vocalism. Both these genres helped build Hiphop\, and beyond that is the spiritual element\, the folk element\, the music for the people. TAIAHA transcends the genres that are so important to culture and industry and breaks them down to their most basic form; frequency and language. The meaning of the words and the feeling of the music. Making the move from one hundred percent DIY production to working with his full versatility on a range of different sounds\, TAIAHA has shown his power with such singles as Age Of Snitches and Grow Some Flowers. This all deepens with his new album God Gave Me Courage. TAIAHA’s Sophomore album GOD GAVE ME COURAGE takes a courageous approach to pushing the envelope of the VOCAL dynamic in Australian Hip-Hop while maintaining authenticity to original style. \nhttps://www.instagram.com/taiahamusic/

SUMMARY:Laugh Mob’s Stoner Stand Up Comedy
DESCRIPTION:Laugh Mob’s Stoner Stand Up Comedy\nThis year were make history! Laugh mob is celebrating it’s 10 year anniversary of coming to the Nimbin MardiGrass festival by bringing you the best acts to perform at Stoner Stand Up Comedy every night of the festival! Have a toke and come listen to to our jokes with a massive international line up hosted by the King of Nimbin Kyle Legacy (UK)! Acts include Ruven Govender (RSA)\, Matty B (bogan philosopher)\, Vanessa Larry Mitchell (Teardrops on my dildo)\, Gavin Scott (the comedy store)\, Artie Gallagher (Sydney fringe) & more. \nKyle Legacy (UK) – King of the Riff Kyle Legacy lives for the stage! Born & raised in Liverpool\, he now tours the the globe with the popular comedy collective ‘Laugh Mob’. More commonly known as ‘The crowdwork King’\, Legacy has been making appearances at every major festival around the world including the world record holder for most gigs done at the Edinburgh fringe festival… 230 in 24 days! Known as one of the best MCs in the UK\, Kyle is a passed comic at hot water comedy club and this year alone has hosted all the big clubs in Sydney\, Perth\, Melbourne\, Edinburgh\, England\, Estonia\, etc. There’s no room he can’t work. Other credits include opened for Erik Griffin (Workaholichs)\, performed at the comedy store in 3 different countries and Sold Out Edinburgh fringe festival 2017\, 2023 & Perth fringeworld 2021. “The young Ross Noble” ★★★★★ – The funny Tonne “The LeBron James of comedy” ★★★★½ – The Australia \nRuven Govender (RSA) As seen on ‘First Dates’\, Edinburgh Fringe festival\, Sydney comedy festival\, stunt man in training. Times As seen on Russell Brand’s hit TV show Brand X. \nMatty B acknowledged he was a bogan when he realised he owned a ‘going-out’ flanno. Having grown- up in a country town near Newcastle\, he makes full use of his upbringing and experiences from stories about growing up with a father who was a Doctor in Psychology\, to delivering pizzas while stoned as a seventeen year old boy. Despite his self-proclaimed ‘bogan’ tag\, Matty makes use of the token Aussie Racist and dumb Queenslander labels\, commenting on everyday trends such as Aldi’s ‘specials’ and school playground speed limits. Matty B’s style can only be described as casual and unashamed. His humour is dark\, twisted\, vulgar (in the best kind of way)\, surreal and very abstract. \nGavin Scott is a Comedian. Gavin is from Sydney. Gavin likes to drink. Gavin knows a little too much about UFOs & Conspiracies and other weird stuff in general. Gavin will now combine comedy and his knowledge by channelling that energy creatively instead of spending many nights in online forums and hiding from you know who… you know. This is a comedian for the curious as Gavin explores paranormal topics as well as belief structures and  even himself. Gavin wants to believe… and so should you. \n\nVanessa Larry Mitchell is a successful comic\, emcee and event coordinator\, running five of her own successful rooms in the Northern Rivers\, NSW region. Vanesa enjoys pushing the boundaries and breaking down social norms\, by saying those things women shouldn’t say in public\, but we all think! Her show\, Teardrops on My Dildo\, was the Winner Best Comedy 2022 Newcastle Fringe. Fabulous\, filthy and downright hilarious! Brace yourselves for a wild ride of side-splitting hilarity with the modern-day Queen of Sass\, as she takes you on a laugh-out-loud adventure of her trials and tribulations of parenting\, dating and all things female. \n\n\nLoud and making his Grandma proud\, Artie Gallagher is an upcoming fast talking comedian from Sydney.
