SUMMARY:The Gatekeepers for Psychedelic Assisted Therapy approval
DESCRIPTION:About: In July 2023\, Australia’s Therapeutic Goods Administration [TGA] designated Human Research Ethics Committees (HRECs) as the gatekeepers determining who gets approval to begin Psychedelic Assisted Therapy [PAT]. The Townsville Hospital HREC did decide to accept applications and approved their first application last November. \nThis presentation will cover: the PAT therapist approval process; the difficulties presented by the way TGA launched their approval of PAT; the knowledge that has been gained in the first year of the TGA scheme; criteria for reviewing a PAT application; working relationships with the TGA; lessons to be gained from those who already have expertise in this field: the Center at Zurich Psychiatric Hospital who have been doing this since the 80s and the preeminent research center in the US (Mass General Hospital/Harvard Uni); and the effort to coordinate results across Australia. \nSpeaker: Dr Hudson Birden\nHudson Birden is Chair of the Human Research Ethics Committee and Vice Chair of the Research Development Committee at Townsville University Hospital and Health Service\, Institute of Health Research and Innovation. He also hosts the music program Postmodern Backlash on BayFM\, his program sponsored by the Nimbin Hemp Embassy.

SUMMARY:Voices of Change: Exploring Psychedelic Not-for-Profits
DESCRIPTION:Voices of Change: Exploring Psychedelic Not-for-Profits in Drug Law Reform\, Education\, and Advocacy\nAbout: Drug law reform\, advocacy\, and harm reduction manifest through diverse avenues\, yet share a common thread: community engagement. In recent decades\, grassroots movements have evolved into not-for-profit organisations and charities dedicated to challenging the status quo of drug policies and fostering safer\, informed communities. These entities strive to dismantle the stigma surrounding drug use\, creating spaces where individuals can openly discuss altered states and associated behaviours. From the depths of underground networks emerged resilient peer-to-peer organizations that now provide essential support and education for drug users and psychonaughts. Simultaneously\, we witness a transformative era where psychedelic and plant medicines gain recognition within medical spheres. With these substances receiving validation from the medical establishment\, it’s crucial to amplify the voices of those with lived experiences and insights from the underground and on the edges of the establishment. \nJoin us to delve into the impactful work of Australia’s most compelling not-for-profit organizations\, both above and below ground\, as they navigate the complexities of drug reform\, education\, and advocacy. Our esteemed panel guests bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to shed light on the vital contributions of their respective organizations in shaping progressive drug policies and fostering safer\, more informed communities. \nFacilitator: Jonathan Carmichael (Entheogenesis Australis) \nSpeakers: \n\nMichael Balderstone (Nimbin Hemp Embassy)\nCaine Barlow (Entheogenesis Australis)\nSymon Beck (Australian Psychedelic Society)\nSianna-Rose (The PATCH)\nMartin Williams (Psychedelic Research in Science and Medicine)\n\nJonathan Carmichael (Ronny) is an ethnobotanical activist who is interested in social justice and the environment. SUMMARY:Cannabis Laws in Australia
DESCRIPTION:About: This session will discuss Cannabis laws in Australia\, and present a round up of state-by-state drug law reform in 2024. From strip searches at festivals and your friendly sniffers dogs\, to medical cannabis being the only prescribed medicine which makes it illegal to drive\, please come on a journey into many cruel and unusual laws running rampant in contemporary Oz. \nDavid Heilpern\, Drive Change Campaign\n& Sue Higginson\, NSW Greens MLC\nBiographies: \nDavid Heilpern was appointed as a Magistrate in 1998\, and was at the time the youngest magistrate in Australia. Since “retiring” in May 2020\, he has resumed private practice as a solicitor\, as well as returning to Southern Cross University as an adjunct and practice professor. David is committed to speaking out about drug law reform\, particularly the drug driving detection laws\, to ensure that drug laws change to reflect the principles of harm reduction. In particular\, he believes that harm is only increased by applying a law and order model to victimless crimes. \nSue Higginson is a Greens MLC in the NSW Parliament driven by social and environmental justice. Her journey started in the old-growth forests of the North Coast as a frontline activist and her passion for protecting our precious native forests is just as strong today. Sue is in the NSW Parliament to bring in laws that protect First Nations people and their culture\, to end logging in our public native forests and the destruction of nature\, and to challenge the corporate interests that want coal and gas mining extended and expanded in communities across our state.

It’s time for Oz to open up to Adult Use Cannabis! In 2013 Uruguay became the first country in the world to legalize the sale\, cultivation\, and distribution of recreational cannabis\, with Canada launching legalisation in 2018. With Thailand grooving into the green dream in 2022\, Germany has recently flipped the recreational switch in early 2024. There are now a total of ten countries and 24 states in the USA which have legalised Adult Use Cannabis since 2012. Australia is slowly catching on and toking up. \nThe 2024 MardiGrass Hemposium is a space to inform\, learn\, agitate\, inspire and connect in this massively important green revolution. Join us to help OVERGROW THE GOVERNMENT! \n2024 Program Partner: Entheogenesis Australis [EGA]

SUMMARY:TAIAHA
DESCRIPTION:Whether holding it down solo or backed by a band\, this versatile Hiphop artist mixes his childhood soul singing favourites and reggae tempos into his own style of vocalism. Both these genres helped build Hiphop\, and beyond that is the spiritual element\, the folk element\, the music for the people. TAIAHA transcends the genres that are so important to culture and industry and breaks them down to their most basic form; frequency and language. The meaning of the words and the feeling of the music. Making the move from one hundred percent DIY production to working with his full versatility on a range of different sounds\, TAIAHA has shown his power with such singles as Age Of Snitches and Grow Some Flowers. This all deepens with his new album God Gave Me Courage. TAIAHA’s Sophomore album GOD GAVE ME COURAGE takes a courageous approach to pushing the envelope of the VOCAL dynamic in Australian Hip-Hop while maintaining authenticity to original style. \nhttps://www.instagram.com/taiahamusic/

SUMMARY:Laugh Mob’s Stoner Stand Up Comedy
DESCRIPTION:Laugh Mob’s Stoner Stand Up Comedy\nThis year were make history! Laugh mob is celebrating it’s 10 year anniversary of coming to the Nimbin MardiGrass festival by bringing you the best acts to perform at Stoner Stand Up Comedy every night of the festival! Have a toke and come listen to to our jokes with a massive international line up hosted by the King of Nimbin Kyle Legacy (UK)! Acts include Ruven Govender (RSA)\, Matty B (bogan philosopher)\, Vanessa Larry Mitchell (Teardrops on my dildo)\, Gavin Scott (the comedy store)\, Artie Gallagher (Sydney fringe) & more. \nKyle Legacy (UK) – King of the Riff Kyle Legacy lives for the stage! Born & raised in Liverpool\, he now tours the the globe with the popular comedy collective ‘Laugh Mob’. More commonly known as ‘The crowdwork King’\, Legacy has been making appearances at every major festival around the world including the world record holder for most gigs done at the Edinburgh fringe festival… 230 in 24 days! Known as one of the best MCs in the UK\, Kyle is a passed comic at hot water comedy club and this year alone has hosted all the big clubs in Sydney\, Perth\, Melbourne\, Edinburgh\, England\, Estonia\, etc. There’s no room he can’t work. Other credits include opened for Erik Griffin (Workaholichs)\, performed at the comedy store in 3 different countries and Sold Out Edinburgh fringe festival 2017\, 2023 & Perth fringeworld 2021. “The young Ross Noble” ★★★★★ – The funny Tonne “The LeBron James of comedy” ★★★★½ – The Australia \nRuven Govender (RSA) As seen on ‘First Dates’\, Edinburgh Fringe festival\, Sydney comedy festival\, stunt man in training. Times As seen on Russell Brand’s hit TV show Brand X. \nMatty B acknowledged he was a bogan when he realised he owned a ‘going-out’ flanno. Having grown- up in a country town near Newcastle\, he makes full use of his upbringing and experiences from stories about growing up with a father who was a Doctor in Psychology\, to delivering pizzas while stoned as a seventeen year old boy. Despite his self-proclaimed ‘bogan’ tag\, Matty makes use of the token Aussie Racist and dumb Queenslander labels\, commenting on everyday trends such as Aldi’s ‘specials’ and school playground speed limits. Matty B’s style can only be described as casual and unashamed. His humour is dark\, twisted\, vulgar (in the best kind of way)\, surreal and very abstract. \nGavin Scott is a Comedian. Gavin is from Sydney. Gavin likes to drink. Gavin knows a little too much about UFOs & Conspiracies and other weird stuff in general. Gavin will now combine comedy and his knowledge by channelling that energy creatively instead of spending many nights in online forums and hiding from you know who… you know. This is a comedian for the curious as Gavin explores paranormal topics as well as belief structures and  even himself. Gavin wants to believe… and so should you. \n\nVanessa Larry Mitchell is a successful comic\, emcee and event coordinator\, running five of her own successful rooms in the Northern Rivers\, NSW region. Vanesa enjoys pushing the boundaries and breaking down social norms\, by saying those things women shouldn’t say in public\, but we all think! Her show\, Teardrops on My Dildo\, was the Winner Best Comedy 2022 Newcastle Fringe. Fabulous\, filthy and downright hilarious! Brace yourselves for a wild ride of side-splitting hilarity with the modern-day Queen of Sass\, as she takes you on a laugh-out-loud adventure of her trials and tribulations of parenting\, dating and all things female. \n\n\nLoud and making his Grandma proud\, Artie Gallagher is an upcoming fast talking comedian from Sydney.

SUMMARY:MardiGrass Opening Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:Opened by Janelle Saffin MP\, Member for Lismore\n\nBundjalung-Widjabal dancers herald the arrival of Chibo carrying the Hemp Olympix Torch with the Eternal Flame For The Victims Of Prohibition. \nThe Bundjalung Custodians will do a smoking ceremony and welcome to country followed by a minute’s silence to remember our Brothers and Sisters\, Victims of this senseless War on Drugs. Cannabis still accounts for more than 75\,000 arrests a year in Australia\, more than ever before and 90% for personal use. That’s more than 200 arrests every day for pot. Jails have become highly profitable privately owned businesses guaranteed to be over capacity. About 4% of Australians are Aboriginal yet they make up 33% of our prisoners. And 78% of them have been in prison before. We believe ending the drug war will restore a lot of respect and drastically reduce prisoner numbers. \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:MardiGrass Opening Protest
DESCRIPTION:3:15pm : Gather on the footpath outside Nimbin Hospital\n3:30pm : March for cannabis law reform from Nimbin Hospital across the road to the Police Station to deliver a request for the police to join us in asking to be allowed our choice of medicine and recreation\, as part of everyday life – not a criminal matter. We wish them well for a peaceful safe community weekend ahead for everyone. They respect our right to protest and we have to acknowledge it’s the politicians who ultimately make the rules\, not them. However\, we always like to check in case there are any police willing to cross the floor and march with us over the weekend in support of separating cannabis from the other illegal drugs which are nothing like our sacred dried herb. \n1993 was the year when Bob Hopkins surrendered to Nimbin Police in protest of Cannabis prohibition during the first MardiGrass rally.

SUMMARY:'Out There' book launch
DESCRIPTION:“Out There” chronicles 50 years of alternative revolution: the simplest\, yet strangest journey ever undertaken; an insightful collection of 39 separate self-told stories that concisely capture different aspects of Australia’s counterculture movement. This is the real Nimbin revisited through a unique concept that combines powerful photographs with poignant audio recordings and gripping crafted soundtracks. \nBook Launch: 2 pm Friday 3 May\nSat-Sun: Drop by the Aquarius Church any time over the MardiGrass weekend to experience an extraordinary and “out there” book!\nGET TO KNOW THE REAL AND RAW NIMBIN. NEW AUDIOVISUAL BOOK RELEASE\nGET DOWN TO THE AQUARIAN CHURCH TO IMMERSE YOURSELF AND EXPERIENCE A MULTI SENSORIAL JOURNEY THROUGH LOCAL EYES.\nBursting with creativity and revolutionary ideas\, a bunch of dreamers found shelter from the storm. With pure madness or for the sake of love\, a small rural town started a big movement.  Out There chronicles 50 years of alternative revolution: the simplest\, yet strangest journey ever undertaken; an insightful collection of 39 separate self-told stories that concisely capture different aspects of Australia’s counterculture movement. \nA wonderful body of interviews and art including many perceptive and exquisite photos of Nimbin\, its people and the surrounding area.  It gives a strong voice to much of the philosophy & practices that have survived and flourished here while holding a lovingly realistic but inspirational lens to the Nimbin experience.  This is the real Nimbin – naked\, deconstructed and spontaneous – revisited through a unique concept that combines powerful photographs with poignant audio recordings and gripping soundtracks all individually crafted to each tale. \nThe book is created by a duo of photographer Goff and musician Quentin Merlaud. Music lovers working at two ends of the music industry\, they met a decade ago and decided it was time to take on the world. Their first travels brought them to Australia\, where its music history led them to the Aquarius Festival. Was was this? Was it still happening? What was left? \nTaken by their love for the sixties and seventies era\, and probably because of their French roots where revolution is the national anthem\, they ended up in Nimbin.  What’s more enriching than to have a yarn with rule breaking visionaries\, activists\, dreamers\, artists and self thinkers? \nPersuaded that stories shape the world\, this led them to capture and create a unique format merging the stillness of photography and the motion of sounds through an interactive multi-art book. \nCome and wash your sins at the Church of Aquarius\, to celebrate the release of this book with a photography exhibition and audio installation with more goodies in the pipeline!  —— \n“Never before has this ‘alternative’ community of Australians been so thoroughly documented with such style. It is not only authentic but it’s also a book full of love for its subjects\, their philosophies\, their sometimes seemingly wild and wacky ways and also their deep love of the land they and us depend on.” Craig Potton\, MNZM “ \nA unique and vibrant look on a counter culture emblem! Revelatory and entertaining\, this book documents a never-to-be-repeated time that would otherwise quite likely be lost.” Gerard Hindmarsh\, award-winning writer. \n
