DESCRIPTION:3:15pm : Gather on the footpath outside Nimbin Hospital\n3:30pm : March for cannabis law reform from Nimbin Hospital across the road to the Police Station to deliver a request for the police to join us in asking to be allowed our choice of medicine and recreation\, as part of everyday life – not a criminal matter. We wish them well for a peaceful safe community weekend ahead for everyone. They respect our right to protest and we have to acknowledge it’s the politicians who ultimately make the rules\, not them. However\, we always like to check in case there are any police willing to cross the floor and march with us over the weekend in support of separating cannabis from the other illegal drugs which are nothing like our sacred dried herb. \n1993 was the year when Bob Hopkins surrendered to Nimbin Police in protest of Cannabis prohibition during the first MardiGrass rally.

Cannabis still accounts for more than 75\,000 arrests a year in Australia\, more than ever before and 90% for personal use. That’s more than 200 arrests every day for pot. Jails have become highly profitable privately owned businesses guaranteed to be over capacity. About 4% of Australians are Aboriginal yet they make up 33% of our prisoners. And 78% of them have been in prison before. We believe ending the drug war will restore a lot of respect and drastically reduce prisoner numbers.

The men’s event is a 40kg sack while the women contend with an 18kg sack. The top 5 crawl into the final on Sunday. \nThe Dealer’s Nightmare\nA new Olympix event since 2024 \nWe’ve recently heard from the International HEMP Olympix Committee (IHOC) official S Sorrensen that a major change to the HEMP Olympix program has come down from IHOC HQ in Brussels. It seems several of last year’s Nimbin Iron Grower Person Event contestants had taken an inordinately long time to recover and one\, a medallist\, has still not recovered. IHOC official Alan Glover (yes\, there are two IHOC officials in Australia) said\, “While we are still battling the consequences of the drug war with illegal unregulated chemical drugs on the street\, the committee has decided this event must be suspended until the war is over and respect for drug use returns.” After due consideration by the IHOC\, plans are afoot for a replacement gold-medal event reflecting the change from outdoor to indoor growing\, another drug war impact. The Dealer’s Nightmare will be a team event testing quick and accurate reactions to police raids . . . check back for more details. \nIn exciting news\, the IHOC is also considering including Correct Weight as an official HEMP Olympix event this year after its growing popularity in the Fringe Olympix. Contestants aim to to fill a baggie with exactly 28.3 grams. Correct weight keeps the bag. The athletes\, from all over the known world\, performed naked\, and the winners were given a wreath of Cannabis leaves as a prize to be enjoyed later. \n\nThe first modern Hemp Olympix was held in Athens\, Greece\, in 1896. \n\nThe International Hemp Olympix Committee (IHOC)\, formed in 1894\, determined that the modern Hemp Olympix would be an event open to all nationalities and genders to celebrate sport\, Cannabis and the human body. \nThe 1896 Athens Hemp Olympix was a huge success. \nAfter that first Hemp Olympix\, the Games flourished\, being held every four years\, as was the ancient custom. DESCRIPTION:…rolls up in Nimbin around 4.20pm Saturday\nHaving wended its way from Byron Bay. \nLine the street to welcome up to 100 kombis!\nSaturday [event_date_start] 2027\nBYRON BAY \nGathering from 10.30am at the public parking area in Somerset Street\, Depart for Lismore at 12.30 pm. \nLISMORE \nGathering from 1 pm at the public car park cnr Magellan and Dawson Sts. \nDeparting for NIMBIN 3pm sharp! \nAbout the MardiGrass Kombi Konvoy\nMardiGrass 1996 was very important in a number of ways. It was a five day event to include Wednesday the 1st of May\, and it included the first Kombi Konvoy which opened the protest. Over the past three decades the amazing Kombi Konvoy has continued as a proud MardiGrass tradition. \nA procession of variously decorated Kombi vans winds its way from the coast at Byron Bay to nearby Lismore and arrives at 4.20pm in Nimbin led by Chibo\, the Hemp Olympix torchbearer. In the 1990s the Kombis would park in a circle for the opening ceremony while in recent years their arrival heralds the start of the 420 Stoner Blaze.

DESCRIPTION:Gather at 11:00 am in the Western Carpark!The [mardigrass_year] Nimbin MardiGrass Parade is not a spectator sport. Please feel free to join the parade and show your support for pot law reform.\nWe’re all in this together! Gather and get ready for the MardiGrass Parade!! Meet at the exit of the western car park\, across the road from the Community Centre Market. \nThe march is the main event\, so please walk with us for cannabis law reform! This is our 34th consecutive annual Rally for Cannabis Law Reform. \nWe vowed to Rally every year on the first Sunday in May until we are no longer criminals for using this herb. Prohibition is an incitement\, not a control! MardiGrass will become a Festival when we can celebrate the herb without fear of prosecution and persecution. When the Police have a float in the street parade behind the Ganja Faeries\, Big Joint & POLITE\, then we really will have a proper festival and celebration. In the meantime\, this annual event is a POLITICAL PROTEST RALLY. \nLed by the Widjibal Elders of the Bunjalung Nation\, with children holding the Koori flag\, the parade this year will start off at 2.30pm from the Western carpark and make its way south along Cullen street where it will turn left and head down past the Town Hall and Greenbank into Plantem Park for the Cannabis Law Reform Rally\, speeches and MardiGrass Float Prize presentations. \nJust follow the Ganja Faeries and the BIG JOINT!!\nThe Ganja Faeries celebrate the spirit of MardiGrass. They dance behind the Bundjalung people who traditionally welcome the protesters to their country each year. Their dance has itself become a tradition simply because the laws remain unacceptable to all self respecting ganja users\, be they Bundjalung\, faeries or otherwise. \nRally speeches from Bundjalung Elders\, Michael Balderstone of the Hemp Embassy\, Ethan Nadelmann\, David Heilpern\, Cate Faehrmann (Greens)\, Stephen Lawrence (ALP)\, and Dr Brian Walker (Legalise Cannabis). \n\nParade Float Awards\nGet out your fabrics\, banners\, paint brushes and sewing machines to get ready for the annual MardiGrass Parade Float Awards. Have a go at creating a float costume\, banner\, paper mache or sculpture about pot prohibition. Floats can be a vehicle for a powerful message about pot celebration and/or protest. We welcome floats that reflect our area\, our people\, our pride\, our fun and festive spirit\, and desire for a peaceful future. Law reform is the focus of MardiGrass and we encourage all to have a say! Prizes will be presented to the winning floats in Sativa Stadium after the Rally. \nProp and Costume Making\nSpontaneous Art Event #imaginorium in Plantem Park. DRop in and get creative with local makers of sculpture\, puppets and fun. #imaginorium is building some fabulous props for this years protest parade on Sunday. EVer wanted to be a more colourful part of protest? Get your creative skates on to paint\, sew\, cut and bedazzle!! Happening throughout Saturday and Sunday!
