There are a lot of us who’d like to see the cannabis
laws thrown out. There is a much better financed mob who’d
like them to stay the same, or be made harsher.
Studies looking for positive cannabis attributes don’t
get the funding priority that studies looking for harmful effects
do. Add to that the number of people who think that any further
relaxation of social mores will cause the collapse of life as
they know it, and the opportunists prepared to exploit such
fears, and you begin to see the difficulty we have of making
any headway in the current socio-political environment.
This is not said for negativity. It is said as a measure of
the long term determination we must have to one day see an end
to the demonisation of herbs, and in particular, cannabis.
There is no wrong or evil in smoking cannabis that justifies
fines and imprisonment, or the humiliations of searches and
nights in watch-houses.
Fat and sugar have dangers, so cannabis must have some of some
sort surely? Well you might think so, and many do, so why is
it that no-one can prove it does any specific harm? Every study
seems to have a disagreeing counterpart. They can’t even
prove that cannabis impairs driving skills. Some studies claim
an improvement.
Unfortunately, the anti cannabis position has become part of
right wing social dogma, and with that status you need something
big to change it.
While we mightn’t expect cannabis laws to change in a
positive way soon, we should not stop trying to change, nor
cease to oppose such laws.
Hopefully, you too will continue to oppose stupid laws of
any kind, and strive for a dignity that does not depend on status,
wealth, or the diminishment of others.
Join us every May to celebrate your kinship with the rest of
the Harmless Herb Smoking Earthlings.
We will continue to fight ignorance, prejudice, and warped
ideology. We will continue to hold the most peaceful festival
around to demonstrate the positive side of cannabis, and protest
against criminalised cannabis.
You are welcome to come and help.
Well, another MardiGrass over, another fantastic MardiGrass,
and the thing that makes it special is the enormous number
of people who come with good hearts, not only to have a good
time, but to show the world just how peaceful, well behaved,
organised, creative and talented pot users can be, that they
are nothing to fear, and that pot is nothing to fear.
Thank you to all those people who worked hard to make it
possible, especially the volunteers who came from all over
the world, and spent their time at MardiGrass helping us to
make it work, as well as enjoying the entertainment. It is
a privilege and a humbling experience to see the effort put
in by people who had been strangers the day before, and who
often worked above and beyond the call, and then turned up
for more.
Thank you to all those who came, contributed, and enjoyed.
Through your participation and attendance, the MardiGrass
Organising Body and the Hemp Embassy will continue to fight
for saner drug laws, while also trying to generate a better
understanding of cannabis and cannabis users in general.
The music this year was the best ever, and bands from all
over the country came to help our cause, for their costs alone.
Speakers, musicians, performers, growers, and athletes all
contributed their best, while parking, sanitation, and Jungle
Patrol did likewise. The level of co-operation and the collective
sense of purpose was very empowering. It shows us all what
we can do when we put our hearts into it.
I want to thank you all for humbling my normal cynicism.
DO IT AGAIN NEXT YEAR!!
