Dr Keith
Bolton holds a degree in Agricultural Science (University of
Queensland) and a PhD in Environmental Engineering (Griffith
University). Keith is currently Managing Director of EcoTechnology
Australia, and Project Manager for Centre for Ecotechnology
at Southern Cross University.
A cornerstone mop-crop project managed by Keith is the Byron
Effluent Reuse Wetland, which was conceived in response to community
objections to a proposed ocean outfall. In collaboration with
Byron Shire Council and Southern Cross University, Keith developed
and tested a go-with-the-flow-of-nature alternative, successfully
gained $1.5M funding.
The project involved planting 600,000 paperbark trees for effluent
reuse, wetland regeneration, acid sulfate soil management and
carbon credits. Keith is currently working on other mop-crop
projects with Local Councils involving bamboo, hemp, kenaf,
hay, and bananas, and he is proving that we can indeed turn
"effluent into affluence".
Research interests
Keith's research and consultancy interests have a strong focus
on the following topics, and he aims to turn textbooks into
on-ground action to deliver innovative go-with-the-flow-of-nature
technology:
"turning wastewater into resourcewater" and
"mop-crop technology" as an alternative to dumping
effluent into rivers, lakes and oceans.
